CAO Offers 2025: Key Steps for Applicants to Consider

The Central Applications Office (CAO) has issued offers for the 2025 academic year, marking a significant milestone for aspiring students in Ireland. This announcement followed a lengthy application process that began on November 4, 2023, involving 89,258 applicants vying for places in over 1,000 courses at various third-level institutions.
For many, the immediate instinct may be to accept an offer without hesitation. Yet, it is crucial for applicants to carefully assess whether the course aligns with their interests and aptitudes. This week’s offers particularly affect the 19,782 applicants under the age of 23 who recently completed their Leaving Certificate.
Understanding the Offer Process
Each applicant has a unique access password to log into the CAO website’s “My Application” section, where they can view their offers. An applicant may receive offers from both the level-eight honours degree list and the level-six/seven higher certificate list. Importantly, applicants can accept only one offer. The deadline for acceptance is indicated on the offer notice, with the next deadline set for September 2, 2025, at 15:00.
If a student receives an offer for their first-choice course, that will be their only offer from that list. However, if they receive a lower-preference offer, they may still receive additional offers up until mid-October based on available places and their CAO points score.
Currently, it is unclear how many offers will be accepted in the coming days, and how many students might choose to defer their entry until 2026. Notably, less than 5 percent of the places available in this round will be re-offered, making it essential for applicants to consider their current offers seriously.
Deferral Process and Considerations
Students wishing to defer their offers must refrain from accepting and instead email the admissions office of the respective college immediately. The email should include their name as it appears on the CAO application, their CAO application number, the course code, and the reason for deferral. It is essential that “Deferred entry” is clearly indicated in the subject line of the email.
Each college has its own deferral policies, which applicants should review on their websites. To secure a deferred place, students must reapply through the CAO in the following year and pay the appropriate application fee. The deferred course must be listed as the first and only preference on the new application.
For those considering deferral, it is critical to act quickly, as communications regarding deferrals must reach the college’s admissions office at least two days before the acceptance deadline.
Students who decide to withdraw from their course after a few weeks not only miss out on their academic journey but also face financial repercussions. The annual registration fee is approximately €3,000, and the Higher Education Authority payment can exceed €8,000 in the first year of any new course they may register for in the future.
Given these potential costs and the importance of making an informed decision, applicants should thoroughly research their course options. Websites like qualifax.ie provide comprehensive information about all available courses, while college-specific prospectuses offer further insights.
Before making a final decision, prospective students should take the time to gather information about course content, structure, and career opportunities. Engaging with the college directly to clarify any uncertainties can also be beneficial.
As this pivotal moment unfolds for the class of 2025, applicants are encouraged to reflect on their choices carefully. Ensuring that the offered course aligns with their interests and future aspirations will be vital for a fulfilling educational experience. For many, this will be the opportunity to embark on an exciting new chapter in their lives.
