Scientists Unveil Unique Dinosaur with Defensive Spikes

A team of scientists has uncovered the remarkable features of a dinosaur known as Spicomellus, which roamed the Earth approximately 165 million years ago. This dinosaur, considered one of the oldest ankylosaurs, boasted extraordinary neck spikes measuring up to 87 centimetres in length, designed to protect it from predators. The findings were published in the scientific journal Nature, revealing insights into the dinosaur’s unique defensive adaptations.

The discovery originated from fossil analysis conducted near Boulemane, Morocco. The original understanding of Spicomellus was based on a single rib bone acquired in 2019. Subsequent excavations led to the recovery of additional remains, enhancing the knowledge of this peculiar creature. The newly unearthed fossils indicated that the dinosaur had bony spikes fused to its ribs, a feature unprecedented in vertebrate history.

Ankylosaurs, the group to which Spicomellus belongs, are well-known for their heavily armoured bodies and distinctive club-shaped tails. However, the presence of metre-long spikes protruding from the neck of Spicomellus marks a significant deviation from typical ankylosaur morphology. Professor Richard Butler from the University of Birmingham, who co-led the study, expressed excitement about the implications of this discovery, stating, “Spicomellus is one of the strangest dinosaurs that we’ve ever discovered.”

The extraordinary fossils have prompted researchers to rethink the evolutionary path of armoured dinosaurs. Professor Susannah Maidment, also from the University of Birmingham and co-lead of the research, emphasized the novelty of the findings. “These fossils are absolutely bizarre and change how we understand ankylosaur evolution,” she noted. The diverse array of spikes and plates on Spicomellus includes not only the impressive neck spikes but also large upward-projecting spikes over the hips and a variety of blade-like spikes throughout its body.

While the initial purpose of such formidable armour likely centred around defence, researchers suggest that these features may have also served as displays for attracting mates or demonstrating dominance to rivals. This dual function highlights the complexity of evolutionary adaptations in prehistoric creatures.

The initial identification of Spicomellus raised questions about its classification within the ankylosaur group. This latest research has definitively confirmed its status as Africa’s only known ankylosaur, and its unique characteristics far exceed initial expectations.
