Urgent Call for Traffic Wardens to Ease Letterkenny Congestion

UPDATE: A critical motion is set to be raised by Councillor Tomás Seán Devine this Tuesday, urging the implementation of traffic wardens and Gardaí in Letterkenny to combat severe traffic congestion. This urgent call comes as local residents face daily gridlock during peak hours, with no immediate infrastructure solutions in sight.
Councillor Devine, representing the 100% Redress Party, emphasizes that immediate action is essential. “We have several congested areas at certain times of the day, and any help to sort this would go a long way in helping those constantly stuck in traffic,” he stated. The motion will be discussed at the upcoming Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting, where officials from Donegal County Council will provide a response.
Traffic in Letterkenny has reached critical levels, with Devine warning that necessary relief roads and infrastructure improvements are still at least 8 to 10 years away. “Local businesses and shops will never survive if this traffic congestion continues,” he asserted, highlighting the economic impact on the community.
This call to action mirrors a successful initiative from May 2019, when Gardaí were deployed to manage traffic in the town during peak hours. The previous operation was praised for significantly improving traffic flow, prompting Devine to advocate for a similar approach now.
Adding to the urgency, Ciaran Brogan, Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford, is set to propose a Special Roads Workshop. This initiative will focus on urgent traffic calming measures needed within the municipal district. Community members are already mobilizing; a public meeting was held in the Oldtown area on Wednesday, where residents protested the ongoing traffic issues and demanded action on proposed relief roads.
Organiser Mary T. Sweeney of Aontú called for unity among residents, urging them to sign a petition addressing the pressing traffic concerns. “Since I came to Letterkenny 21 years ago, traffic has been shambolic,” Devine remarked during the event, underscoring the long-standing nature of the issue.
As the motion is set to be discussed, the community watches closely for the response from local authorities. With the pressure mounting for immediate solutions, residents and businesses alike are hopeful that decisive action will soon follow.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops. The future of Letterkenny’s traffic management depends on the outcomes of this urgent call for action.
