Five Limerick Pubs Listed for Sale Amid Industry Challenges

Five notable pubs in the Limerick area have recently been placed on the market, prompting concerns about the viability of local establishments. The pubs for sale include the Seven Sisters in Kildimo, O’Shea’s Pub in Ballysimon, Barr Na Sraide in Ballyhahill, Jack O’Rourkes Bar & Accommodation in Abbeyfeale, and JC Barrett’s Bar in Glin. All are listed as “going concerns” and feature residential accommodations, as advertised on the property website Daft.
Each pub has been highlighted in promotional materials that emphasize their significance to the community. The Seven Sisters is described as “one of County Limerick’s best known public houses,” with the selling agent, Hogan Durkan, anticipating strong interest from local, national, and international buyers.
GL Auctioneers has expressed enthusiasm for O’Shea’s Pub, noting its prominent location and extensive catchment area just a short distance from Limerick city centre. Similarly, West Property Group has characterized Barr Na Sraide as a well-established venue with a successful trading history. JC Barrett’s Bar stands out by being the only pub with a listed asking price of €385,000, while the others have prices available upon application.
Industry Pressures and Community Importance
The sale of these pubs highlights broader challenges facing the publican trade in the region. Eamonn O’Rahilly, chairman of the city Vintners Federation branch, shared insights into the current state of the industry. He emphasized the vital role pubs play in community life and the financial pressures they endure.
O’Rahilly pointed out that the publican sector, like many small and medium enterprises (SMEs), is burdened with significant taxation. He noted the impact of a 13.5% VAT rate on food sold in pubs, alongside a 23% VAT on all products sold and additional excise duties. The introduction of the Universal Social Charge (USC) several years ago, which remains in effect, has further complicated financial matters for publicans.
“Rising wages are another constant challenge,” O’Rahilly stated. He referred to the current minimum wage of €13.50, which is expected to increase to €16 by 2026 or 2027. This increase comes with further PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) obligations, adding to the financial strain.
Publicans also face additional costs related to licensing, insurance, and various operational expenses. O’Rahilly noted that these financial pressures make it difficult to attract new talent to the industry. He highlighted the demanding hours that come with working in pubs, as they must accommodate celebrations and gatherings throughout the year.
A Call to Action for Community Support
Reflecting on a report that indicates Limerick has experienced the steepest decline in pub numbers of any county in Ireland, O’Rahilly issued a poignant reminder: “Use it or lose it.” He underscored the importance of supporting local pubs, which serve as venues for both joyous occasions and solemn gatherings.
Despite the challenges, O’Rahilly remains optimistic about the future of the Irish pub. He pointed out successful initiatives like Twilight Thursday, which have revitalized local nightlife. Significant investments in establishments such as The Old Quarter and Bobby Byrne’s, along with community efforts to save local pubs, demonstrate the resilience and importance of these venues.
“The Irish pub still has a vibrancy, but it has to be used. We offer more than just alcoholic beverages; there are now numerous non-alcoholic options available, allowing people to socialize in a controlled environment,” O’Rahilly noted. He emphasized that pubs should be enjoyed as social spaces that cater to the entire community, regardless of alcohol consumption.
As Limerick’s pub landscape continues to change, the importance of community support and engagement remains critical for the survival of these establishments.
