Urgent Update: Arson Confirmed in Drogheda IPAS Centre Fire
UPDATE: A fire at the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in Drogheda, Co Louth has been confirmed as arson, prompting urgent calls for public assistance in the investigation. The blaze erupted on October 31, 2025, around 8:00 PM, leading to the rapid evacuation of residents, including four children and a baby.
Emergency services were dispatched to the facility on Georges Street shortly after the fire was reported. Authorities confirmed that the fire was deliberately set, endangering the lives of vulnerable families seeking safety. A Garda spokesperson stated, “This was an extremely dangerous act endangering the lives of the residents, including children.”
In the aftermath, several individuals were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical evaluation. Taoiseach Micheal Martin condemned the incident as “deeply disturbing,” while Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan warned that there would be “serious consequences” for those responsible.
Urgent Appeal: Gardai have launched an investigation into the arson attack and are seeking information from the public. Anyone who was in the Georges Street area between 7:30 PM and 8:20 PM on Friday is urged to contact Drogheda Garda Station at 041 9874200.
The Irish Refugee Council‘s CEO, Nick Henderson, described the attack as “appalling,” highlighting the trauma faced by families fleeing war and persecution. He emphasized the importance of community solidarity, stating, “Those responsible are a tiny minority and do not reflect the proud and welcoming spirit of the Drogheda community.”
Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy also condemned the attack, asserting that it could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities. He praised the quick response of the fire service, which prevented a potentially tragic outcome.
As the investigation unfolds, local authorities are actively sourcing alternative accommodation for the affected residents. The incident has sparked a broader dialogue about the safety and treatment of those seeking asylum in Ireland, underlining the urgent need for collective action against hate and violence.
Stay tuned for updates as Gardai continue their investigation into this shocking incident. This is a developing story, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
