Krakow Declared Europe’s Cheapest City Break Amid Rising Costs
UPDATE: Krakow is now being hailed as Europe’s “cheapest city break,” offering budget-savvy travelers an affordable gateway amid soaring living costs across popular destinations. With prices for food, drink, and transport at an all-time low, Krakow is capturing the attention of holidaymakers seeking value without sacrificing experience.
As the cost of living continues to spike in many European cities, tourists are actively searching for budget-friendly alternatives. Poland’s second-largest city, Krakow, emerges as a frontrunner, providing visitors with stunning medieval architecture, charming cobblestone streets, and prices that are hard to beat.
In September, just after the school holidays, I traveled to Krakow to explore its affordability during the shoulder season. With temperatures still lingering around 26C, the city buzzed with outdoor events, while the crowds remained manageable compared to other tourist hotspots.
Krakow is easily accessible with budget airlines like Ryanair offering fares starting from just £19.99 each way. The journey from the airport to the city center takes less than half an hour by train, costing a mere 13PLN (approximately £2.67), making it a seamless transition into the heart of this vibrant city.
My accommodation was at the newly opened TRIBE hotel, just three minutes from St. Florian’s Gate, with room rates starting at £96 per night. The hotel’s modern amenities and excellent location make it a top choice for short breaks.
Krakow’s public transport system is efficient and affordable, eliminating the need for expensive taxis. A single tram ride costs around £0.50, while a 48-hour ticket for unlimited travel is available for just over £7.
Cultural experiences abound in Krakow, with the historic Czartoryski Museum charging only £13 for entry. Highlights include masterpieces like Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. For those looking to venture beyond the city, the Wieliczka Salt Mine offers breathtaking underground tours starting at 143 PLN (nearly £30), while trips to Auschwitz can range from £60 to £80 for guided tours, or even 130PLN (around £26.63) for educational insights.
Food and drink prices remain incredibly reasonable, especially for those willing to explore beyond tourist traps. A hearty plate of pierogi can be enjoyed for less than £10, and local convenience stores offer quick lunches for around £2.50. For beer enthusiasts, a pint in the Old Town averages around £3, significantly cheaper than many Western European capitals.
So, is Krakow truly the cheapest city break in Europe? While some prices may not be as low as anticipated, the overall value, particularly in terms of food, drink, and transport, makes it a strong contender.
If you’re seeking a blend of history, culture, and affordability, Krakow is undoubtedly an ideal choice for your next weekend getaway. As travel costs soar elsewhere, this charming Polish city provides a refreshing escape for budget-conscious explorers.
