UPDATE: Catherine Connolly is set to be inaugurated as Ireland’s 10th President today at 12 PM in a significant ceremony at Dublin Castle. This event follows Connolly’s landslide victory in the recent Presidential election, where she will succeed Michael D Higgins, who served for 14 years.

The inauguration, taking place in St Patrick’s Hall, marks the 14th ceremony since the first president, Douglas Hyde, was installed 80 years ago. Connolly’s arrival will be marked by a ceremonial motorcade that enters through the Cork Hill gate, culminating in her official swearing-in at the historic venue.

The ceremony will last approximately one hour. Following her arrival, Connolly will be greeted by the Tánaiste and led to the main staircase, where the formal proceedings will begin. This pivotal moment will see Connolly take the Oath of Office, as mandated by Article 12.8 of the Irish Constitution, in both Irish and English.

Chief Justice Donal O’Donnell will administer the oath, after which Connolly will take the stage to address the audience, including government officials and judiciary members. The Taoiseach is expected to deliver a speech prior to Connolly’s remarks, echoing previous presidential addresses that often reflect on Ireland’s cultural landscape.

Attendance is expected to be around 350 guests, including family members like Connolly’s husband Brian McEnery and their children Stephen and Brian. Outgoing President Michael D Higgins and his wife, Sabina Coyne, will also be present, marking the transition of leadership.

The inauguration will have a second part later today at 6 PM, featuring a State Reception in the State Apartments. Previous receptions have been grand affairs; in 2011, 1,700 guests celebrated Higgins’ inauguration with performances from notable Irish artists.

Stay tuned for live updates on the inauguration starting at 10 AM. This historic event not only signifies a new chapter for Ireland but also reflects the evolving political landscape of the nation.
