Irish Students Rush to Study Abroad: Over 2,000 Enroll in 2024
UPDATE: A surge of Irish students is opting for study abroad programs, with over 2,000 enrolling in European universities in 2024. This trend is fueled by the allure of English-taught degrees and the quest for adventure, as many seek alternatives beyond their CAO points scores.
Authorities confirm that the Netherlands remains the top destination, boasting nearly 400 English-taught undergraduate programs. With tuition fees averaging just €2,600 per year, the Netherlands offers an attractive option for those looking to enhance their skill set. Irish students are particularly drawn to disciplines such as psychology, business/economics, and physiotherapy.
In addition to tuition, students must navigate housing challenges, especially in cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, where accommodation can exceed €550 per month. However, those securing housing in Groningen can find options for about €500 monthly, provided they act quickly.
The appeal of studying in Europe extends beyond the Netherlands. In Poland, the most popular fields include veterinary medicine and medicine, with nearly 60 Irish students enrolled in veterinary programs at universities like Warsaw. Meanwhile, Italy attracts students for its low-cost medical education, with fees ranging from €156 to €4,000 based on family income.
Many students, like one from Limerick who is pursuing a degree in international relations at the University of Leiden, are gaining unique educational experiences abroad that enhance their employability. With approximately 90% of programs in the Netherlands requiring only basic entry qualifications—two H5 grades and four O6 grades—access to these opportunities is easier than ever.
As the 2025-26 academic year approaches, this trend reflects a broader shift in the educational landscape, where studying abroad not only fulfills academic aspirations but also fosters personal growth and global perspectives. These developments signal a dynamic change in how Irish students are approaching higher education, offering them a chance to thrive in an increasingly competitive job market.

The clock is ticking for prospective students—securing a place abroad could redefine their future.
