Galway Community Drives Shoebox Appeal Past 3 Million Milestone
The community in Galway has made a significant contribution to the annual Christmas shoebox appeal, generating a remarkable total of 34,343 gifts for children living in poverty over the past three years. This effort has helped the charity Team Hope surpass the 3 million shoebox milestone nationally, with the three-millionth gift set to be dispatched in the coming weeks.
Since its inception in 2010, Team Hope has sent over 2.8 million shoebox gifts from Ireland to various countries across Africa and Eastern Europe. The charity’s figures reveal that generous donors in Galway have created almost 34,500 gifts in the last three years alone. There is still time for the community to add to this impressive total, as drop-off points remain open throughout the county until November 15.
Community Efforts Highlighted
Deborah Lowry, CEO of Team Hope, expressed gratitude for the support received from the people of Galway since the charity began its efforts. “The support we have received from the people of Galway since 2010 has been incredible,” she stated. “But there’s always a need for more shoeboxes, so it would be great if schools, parents, businesses, and community groups across the county can come together for one last push to create their own.”
Lowry emphasized the emotional impact of the shoeboxes, which are often packed by children for children. Each box is filled not only with toys and treats but also with the “invisible gifts of love and hope.” She added, “That kindness, travelling across oceans, reminds a child that they are not forgotten—that someone, somewhere cares about them.”
Reaching the 3 million shoebox mark coincides with Team Hope’s 15th anniversary of bringing joy to children in some of the world’s poorest regions, many of whom have never experienced the joy of Christmas. The organization is urging everyone in Galway to continue this vital work.
How to Contribute
Filled shoeboxes can be dropped off until November 15 at designated locations across Galway and throughout the country. For those who prefer a more convenient option, Team Hope offers the ability to send a personalized shoebox online for €25 through their website, available until Christmas Eve.
