Drumnahough Wind Farm Construction Set to Begin in Donegal

The construction of the Drumnahough Wind Farm, a significant renewable energy project in Donegal, is poised to commence following the initiation of pre-construction activities. The joint venture between SSE and FuturEnergy Ireland announced that this wind farm will feature 12 turbines, each with a maximum tip height of 167.5 meters. The project is expected to contribute 58 megawatts (MW) to the region’s energy grid.

Located in the rural uplands of Donegal, the wind farm sits approximately 13 kilometers from Letterkenny and spans the townlands of Treankeel, Meenadaura, Carrickalangan, and Cark. With an investment of €120 million, the Drumnahough Wind Farm is strategically positioned near the Lenalea Wind Farm, which commenced operations in late 2023, as well as SSE’s operational Culliagh and Meentycat wind farms.

Local Economic Impact and Job Creation

Civil engineering works at the Drumnahough site are anticipated to begin shortly after the current pre-construction phase concludes. The construction process is expected to create approximately 60 full-time direct and indirect jobs at peak delivery. Efforts will be made to involve local contractors and suppliers from both Donegal and the North-West region wherever possible.

A spokesperson for the project emphasized the broader economic benefits, stating, “Over its operational lifetime, Drumnahough Wind Farm will contribute millions of euros to the local exchequer through commercial rates payments to Donegal County Council. These funds will support the provision of essential local services and infrastructure.”

The development of the Drumnahough Wind Farm reflects a growing commitment to renewable energy in Ireland, aiming to bolster the region’s energy resilience while supporting local economies.
