The Kilkenny Science Festival has announced two new free events that will take place this week at the historic Rothe House. The festival aims to engage the public with science through entertaining and informative presentations. The first event, “Chemistry in the Movies,” will feature Dr John O’Donoghue, the Education Coordinator for Ireland at the Royal Society of Chemistry, on November 12, 2023, at 19:30.

Dr O’Donoghue will explore the portrayal of chemists and chemistry in film and television. This unique presentation will employ short clips and graphics to highlight various themes, such as problem-solving and character development. “The movies chosen for this discussion are based around a number of themes; problem solving, plot devices, chemical companies, and people,” said Dr O’Donoghue. The event is primarily aimed at adults and older teenagers due to references to movies and adult themes rated 15/16.

The following evening, on November 13, Rothe House will host “Serial Killers: Fascination with True Crime,” featuring psychologists Dr Lorraine Bowman Grieve and Dr Jennifer O’Mahoney. This session will delve into the reasons behind the public’s fascination with true crime stories and serial killers. Attendees can expect an insightful discussion that separates fact from fiction, exploring why these narratives captivate audiences. Pre-booking is essential and can be done through the festival’s website.

In addition to these discussions, the Medieval Mile Museum will hold a stonemasonry workshop on November 13 at 18:30. Supported by the South East Technological University, this workshop invites adults to learn about the techniques and traditions that have defined Irish architecture throughout history. Participants will witness live demonstrations and gain insights into how ancient practices continue to influence modern craftsmanship.

Also scheduled for the same evening is a “Science of Brewing” event at Sullivan’s Taproom on John Street, starting at 20:00. This session will feature a master brewer discussing the art and science behind brewing, offering an engaging experience for participants over the age of 18.

The festival will conclude on November 14 with a performance by Dr Ken Science at Langton’s ballroom. His show, “It’s All Done with Mirrors?”, is designed for families and the general public. Attendees can expect a captivating 45-minute presentation where Dr Ken reveals the science and engineering principles behind magic tricks. The show will run from 10:00 to 12:30, with intervals throughout the morning.
