Urgent Recall of Brie Mariotte Cheese Due to Listeria Risk

A significant recall has been announced for Brie Mariotte cheese due to concerns over possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a For Action notice today, warning of potential health risks associated with consuming the affected product.
The recall affects various batches of Brie Mariotte, which originated in France. Specifically, 1 kg packages with best before dates up to and including August 30, 2025, along with all pack sizes featuring use-by dates between August 8, 2025, and August 13, 2025, are included in this alert. This cheese is available at multiple retailers across Ireland, including Dunnes Stores.
Retailers are instructed to promptly remove the implicated batches from sale and to display recall notices at points of sale. Wholesalers and distributors have been asked to communicate directly with affected customers regarding the recall. It is crucial that caterers also refrain from using the implicated batches.
Symptoms of listeriosis can vary significantly. Commonly, individuals may experience mild flu-like symptoms, but in some cases, the infection can escalate to serious health complications. The FSAI has emphasized that vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems, including the elderly, are at higher risk of severe health issues from Listeria monocytogenes infection.
The Health Protection Surveillance Centre notes that in severe cases, listeriosis can spread to the central nervous system, leading to conditions such as meningitis and septicaemia. Symptoms of these serious complications can include headache, confusion, stiff neck, and loss of balance.
In conjunction with this recall, the FSAI also reported a separate recall involving SuperValu goat’s cheese products due to the same contamination risk. The affected goat cheeses include “SuperValu Goat’s Cheese” in 110 g packages with use-by dates of August 7 and August 12, as well as “Freshly Prepared by Our Cheesemongers Goat’s Cheese” in various pack sizes with use-by dates of August 11 and August 12. Additionally, “SuperValu Chevre Log” in multiple pack sizes with all use-by dates, including today, has been recalled.
The FSAI continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged manufacturers to ensure that the implicated batches are removed from the market. Consumers are advised not to consume any of the affected products and to stay informed through official recall notices.
As the situation develops, authorities stress the importance of adhering to food safety guidelines to prevent potential health risks associated with listeriosis.
