Urgent Recall of Brie Mariotte Cheese Over Listeria Concerns

A significant recall has been issued for the popular cheese product Brie Mariotte due to concerns over potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) made this announcement today, highlighting the serious health risks associated with consuming the affected product.

Specific batches of Brie Mariotte, which is imported from France, are being recalled. The affected cheese is packaged in 1-kilogram units with best before dates up to and including August 30, 2025. Additionally, all pack sizes with use by dates ranging from June 8, 2025, to August 13, 2025, are included in this recall. Retailers, including Dunnes Stores, are mandated to remove these products from their shelves and display recall notices prominently at points of sale.

Health Risks Associated with Listeria

Consumption of products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may lead to listeriosis, which can present mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and headaches. In some cases, gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre emphasizes that while many individuals may experience mild symptoms, the infection can be particularly severe for vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

“In immunocompromised and elderly individuals, the infection can occasionally spread to the central nervous system, causing meningitis and/or septicaemia,” the Health Protection Surveillance Centre stated.

The incubation period for listeriosis typically averages three weeks but can range from three to seventy days. As a precaution, consumers are advised against consuming any of the affected batches of Brie Mariotte.

Other Cheese Products Also Recalled

This recall follows a similar incident involving three goat cheese products from SuperValu, which were also found to potentially contain Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products include “SuperValu Goat’s Cheese” in 110g packages with use-by dates of August 7 and August 12, 2025, as well as “Freshly Prepared by Our Cheesemongers Goat’s Cheese” in various pack sizes with use by dates of August 11 and August 12, 2025. Additionally, “SuperValu Chevre Log” in various sizes with all use by dates up to and including today are also part of the recall.

According to the FSAI, there is currently no evidence linking these cheese recalls to the ongoing listeriosis outbreak associated with ready-to-heat meals or other vegetable products. The authority continues to urge manufacturers and retailers to ensure the removal of the implicated products from sale and to provide necessary recall notices to customers.

Consumers are strongly advised to check their refrigerators for any of the mentioned products and to avoid consumption until further notice. The FSAI is committed to ensuring food safety and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
