The Rose of Tralee festival has returned, with strict regulations in place to ensure the safety and well-being of its contestants. Laura Daly, representing Kerry, shared insights on the behind-the-scenes measures designed to keep the 32 Roses healthy and happy during the event, which commenced in March 2024 and features a televised segment on Monday and Tuesday.

The festival, hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí Ó Sé, is known for its vibrant celebrations. However, as Daly noted, the process can be exhausting. “There’s a mixture of things,” she explained in an interview with the Irish Mirror. “But they’re put in place in a sense that keeps us safe, keeps us well, keeps us going, because it is a very long process.”

The Roses met for the first time at the Knightsbrook Hotel in Meath, where they participated in activities such as visiting Emerald Park. As the festival unfolded, keeping track of time and adhering to curfews became essential. “We had a gala up in Co Meath, and there was a few of us looking at our chaperone saying, ‘When is it bedtime?’” Daly recalled.

Behind the glamour, the festival organizers ensure that the participants remain focused and energized. “It’s just to have our best interests at heart,” she said. “The biggest thing is we have a briefing every night, which basically is time keeping. If you’re not on time, it can throw everything off.”

Daly emphasized the importance of maintaining both physical and mental well-being during the event. “These rules, I guess people see them as rules, but when you’re in it, you know why you need them,” she explained. Contestants are encouraged to eat healthily and exercise, contributing to their overall performance and experience.

Another participant, Nancy Lehane from Cork, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to represent her county. At just 22 years old, she described her selection as a “dream come true” after recently earning a degree in Primary Education.

As the festival progresses, the emphasis on health and safety remains paramount, ensuring that all contestants are prepared to shine on stage. The unique blend of tradition, community spirit, and personal growth makes the Rose of Tralee an event celebrated not only for its beauty but also for its commitment to the well-being of its participants.

With the competition heating up, the anticipation surrounding the outcome is palpable, as both Daly and Lehane prepare to showcase their talents on a national stage. The Rose of Tralee festival continues to be a testament to the vibrant culture and camaraderie shared among its contestants, affirming its place in the hearts of many.
