Ireland Announces 2026 Bank Holiday Changes, Including Bonus Day Off
Ireland has confirmed changes to its bank holiday schedule for 2026, with an added bonus day off for many workers. The announcement comes as part of a comprehensive list detailing the ten bank holidays throughout the year, providing clarity for individuals planning their time off.
The first bank holiday of 2026, New Year’s Day, has already occurred, marking the start of a year filled with well-deserved breaks. Following this, bank holidays are scheduled for February, March, April, May, and June, before a summer break in August and October. The year will conclude with Christmas Day on December 25 and St Stephen’s Day on December 26.
A significant change this year arises from the timing of St Stephen’s Day, which falls on a Saturday. As a result, many employees are entitled to a substitute benefit, granting them an extra day off to compensate for the holiday occurring on a weekend. According to Citizen’s Information, “If the public holiday falls on a day which is not a normal working day for that business (for example, on Saturday or Sunday), you are still entitled to benefit for that public holiday.”
Employers are required to provide one of the following options: an additional paid day off or an alternative day off during the same pay period. This adjustment means that many Irish workers will enjoy an extended festive season in December.
Looking ahead, the situation will become even more pronounced in 2027 when both Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day will fall on the weekend—Saturday and Sunday—potentially allowing for two extra days off for many employees, depending on their employers’ arrangements.
With services like public transport operating on reduced schedules during holidays, many people will benefit from the official time off, while businesses and schools may close for the duration. The Organisation of Working Time Act stipulates that most employees are entitled to paid leave, reinforcing the importance of these holidays in promoting work-life balance.
As the year progresses, this confirmed list of holidays serves as a valuable resource for planning family gatherings, trips, or simply taking time to recharge. The inclusion of a bonus day off is welcomed by workers across the nation, highlighting the government’s commitment to employee welfare and well-being.
