Ciara Mageean Shares Health Update Following Cancer Diagnosis
Olympian Ciara Mageean has provided a significant health update after revealing her cancer diagnosis last year. The 33-year-old athlete announced her condition in July 2023, just six months after becoming engaged to her partner Thomas Moran. Mageean admitted that the news was overwhelming, but she has recently shared a positive development with her followers.
In a heartfelt social media post, Mageean disclosed that she completed her twelfth round of chemotherapy shortly before Christmas. She expressed gratitude for the support she has received during this challenging time. “I’ve been pretty absent on here the last few months, so I thought I’d share a little life update,” she wrote.
Mageean continued, “I finished my 12th round of chemo just before Christmas, which meant I had a lovely chemo-free Christmas with my family.” She described the past few months as a “mixed bag” of moments spent with her springer spaniel, Sam, and cherished time with family and friends when her energy levels improved. The athlete emphasized the importance of her support network, stating, “Without them I would be lost.”
She also took a moment to thank her followers for their kind words and encouragement, saying, “I’ve shed so many tears reading your beautiful messages. On those tough days, they really gave me a lift. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart.” Mageean acknowledged that while the journey ahead remains long, she is committed to finding joy in each day.
Career Highlights and Challenges
Mageean’s athletic career has been marked by impressive achievements. In May 2024, she secured her first European gold medal in the 1500m race in Rome. Her aspirations for the upcoming Olympics in Paris were dashed due to an Achilles injury, which prevented her from competing at the prestigious Stade de France.
Originating from Portaferry, Mageean initially excelled in camogie before transitioning to track and field. She garnered attention early in her career, winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India in 2008. Her accolades continued with gold at the European Youth Olympics and silver at the European Junior Championship.
Making her Olympic debut in 2016 with Team Ireland at the Rio Games, Mageean further solidified her status as a competitive runner. She earned two bronze medals at the European Championships, followed by silver at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships in 2022. Her recent triumph in Rome marked a significant milestone in her career.
Despite personal challenges, Mageean’s resilience and determination continue to inspire many. As she navigates her health journey, her updates serve as a reminder of the human spirit’s strength in the face of adversity.
