Well-known TV architect Hugh Wallace has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy of inspiring home design and a dedicated fan base. Wallace died at his home on October 9, 2023, just after completing filming for the final series of RTÉ’s Home of the Year. His work on the show has brought joy to many viewers, making his loss even more poignant.

While Wallace had wrapped up his work on Home of the Year, he was still in the midst of filming for another popular programme, The Great House Revival. A source close to the late architect shared with Extra.ie that there is uncertainty about how the show will be completed, stating, “He was only midway through that show, so I don’t know what they [RTÉ] are going to do on that. But one way or another it will be finished. It’s what Hugh would have wanted.” This sentiment underscores Wallace’s commitment to his work and his desire for projects to be completed.

His husband, Martin Corbett, expressed deep sorrow in a public statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness and shock that I share the news that my beloved husband and soulmate, Hugh Wallace, passed away suddenly at home last night. I am heartbroken. Please respect my privacy at this deeply painful time.” The couple had been together for over a decade and married in 2012.

A Lasting Tribute and Community Mourning

RTÉ has announced plans for a special tribute to Wallace, acknowledging his significant contributions to the Irish cultural and design landscape. According to a source, the network is compiling some of his most memorable moments on air, emphasizing that “Hugh wasn’t just an architect; he made an enormous contribution to Irish life over the years.”

Kevin Bakhurst, RTÉ’s director general, lauded Wallace as an “inspiration.” He remarked, “On RTÉ’s hugely popular Home of the Year, Hugh, with his fellow judges, not only opened the door to the most extraordinary homes in Ireland, but he also inspired viewers to engage with the vast possibilities of innovative design.” His impact reached far beyond television, touching the lives of many fans and colleagues alike.

Hundreds gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin for Wallace’s funeral on October 13, 2023. The ceremony highlighted how he “shaped the spaces in which people lived their lives,” but also celebrated his life with Corbett, reflecting the deep bond they shared. Co-hosts and fellow architects, including Amanda Bone and Dermot Bannon, attended, along with many others from the design community.

In a heartfelt tribute, close friend John Waters conveyed what many felt, saying, “I had assumed a more flamboyant exit in years to come after much more TV success, and perhaps a couple of Bafta awards.” His words resonated with those who knew Wallace, capturing the sense of loss felt throughout the community.

Future of Wallace’s Shows Uncertain

As for the future of Home of the Year and The Great House Revival, RTÉ has chosen to remain respectful and private during this time. A spokesperson noted, “Our thoughts at this time are with Hugh Wallace’s husband Martin and his family. Out of respect to them, RTÉ will not be commenting on either series at this time. We will review the situation at an appropriate time in consultation with Hugh’s family and the producers of both series.”

Wallace’s sudden passing has left an indelible mark on both the television and design communities. His innovative ideas and infectious passion for architecture will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike, ensuring that his legacy will continue to influence and inspire future generations.
