New Traditional Music Showcase at Belltable Highlights Irish Heritage
The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) will host an evening of traditional music, song, and dance at Belltable on November 15, 2023. This event, part of the “Drawing from the Well” series, aims to connect leading contemporary traditional artists with archival collections to inspire new works. The performance, scheduled for 8 PM, showcases four prominent figures from the Irish traditional music scene.
Highlighting the evening are Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáin, known for her expertise in sean nós dance, John Blake on flute and guitar, Mary Bergin performing on tin whistle, and Conor Connolly with the accordion. Together, they represent a rich tapestry of Ireland’s musical heritage, breathing new life into traditional forms.
In addition to these main performers, two local talents will join the lineup. Stephanie Keane, originally from Limerick, began her Irish dancing journey at just four years old. Competing at World Championship level in Irish step dancing, she later moved to East Clare, where she discovered a passion for sean nós dance. This experience has allowed her to develop a distinctive style characterized by percussive elements.
Derek Hickey, hailing from Adare, County Limerick, will also contribute to the evening. A skilled button accordion player, Hickey’s musical journey began at the age of ten when he picked up the instrument left by his uncle. He has toured with notable ensembles, including the Shannonside Céilí Band and the legendary De Dannan. Currently, he serves as a button accordion tutor at the Irish World Academy, sharing his expertise with the next generation of musicians.
The “Drawing from the Well” series exemplifies the ITMA’s commitment to preserving and promoting Irish traditional music. By linking contemporary artists with historical collections, the initiative not only enriches the cultural landscape but also fosters creativity and innovation within the genre.
As the performance date approaches, anticipation builds within the community. Attendees can expect a vibrant celebration of music and dance that pays homage to Ireland’s rich traditions while encouraging new expressions of art. This event promises to be a significant highlight in the cultural calendar, bringing together artists and audiences in a shared appreciation of Ireland’s musical heritage.
