Police Close Investigation into Gogglebox Star George Gilbey’s Death

Essex Police have officially concluded their investigation into the death of reality television star George Gilbey, known for his appearances on the show Gogglebox. The investigation, which began following his tragic fall on March 27, 2024, found that two men arrested in connection with the incident will face no further action.
Mr. Gilbey, aged 40, suffered severe injuries after falling through a plastic skylight while working on a roof in Shoeburyness, Essex. A previous inquest revealed he sustained traumatic injuries to his head and torso, leading to his untimely death. The police announced on Wednesday that they would not pursue charges against the two men initially arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
Details of the Investigation
In a statement, Essex Police confirmed that their inquiry into Mr. Gilbey’s death had concluded. “The thoughts of everyone at Essex Police remain with George’s family and friends,” the statement read. Although the police investigation has closed, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will continue to lead a separate criminal investigation to determine if there were any breaches of health and safety law.
HSE inspector Natalie Prince expressed their commitment to thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr. Gilbey’s death. “We have been a part of this inquiry from the outset and we will continue to thoroughly investigate George’s tragic death as the lead agency,” she stated. The HSE maintains regular contact with Mr. Gilbey’s family, offering support during this difficult time.
Mr. Gilbey rose to fame through his participation on the Channel 4 series Gogglebox, where he provided commentary on popular television shows alongside his fellow cast members. In addition to his time on Gogglebox, he was a contestant on the 14th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, where he reached the final.
As the investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring safety standards are upheld to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
