Publishers Reject LGBTQ+ Works as Bans and Fear Rise

A growing number of publishers in the United States are declining to publish LGBTQ+ literature, a trend linked to increasing book bans and a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes stemming from the current political climate under the Republican administration. Recent findings reported by The Hill indicate that the return of former President Donald Trump to the political forefront has created a chilling atmosphere in the publishing industry, resulting in more rejections for queer authors and heightened apprehension among industry professionals.

Reports suggest that children’s literature and Young Adult (YA) titles featuring LGBTQ+ themes have faced the most significant impact. According to industry insiders, the combination of book bans, protests, and the Trump administration’s opposition to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives has directly influenced the decision-making process of publishers. Concerns have been raised that this hesitancy to embrace queer literature could persist throughout Trump’s potential presidency.

PEN America, an organization dedicated to human rights and free speech, has been actively monitoring the landscape of book bans in the United States. Their research shows that since 2021, nearly 23,000 books have been banned, with the 2024-2025 school year alone witnessing the banning of 6,870 titles across 23 states and 87 public school districts.

In a statement following the release of their report,

“Everywhere, it is the books that have long fought for a place on a shelf that are being targeted,”

PEN America highlighted the ongoing censorship of literature authored by marginalized groups. They emphasized that LGBTQ+ authors, as well as books addressing issues of race, gender, and sexuality, are particularly at risk.

The organization’s findings also reveal that the current political and cultural climate in the United States often conflates LGBTQ+ identities with “sexually explicit” material. This misconception has been especially damaging in the realm of children’s literature. PEN America noted the disturbing trend of book banners labeling well-regarded children’s titles—such as And Tango Makes Three, Everywhere Babies, The Family Book, Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, and The Purim Superhero—as inappropriate solely for their inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes.

The actions of conservative groups have intensified the pressure on school districts to restrict access to these books. PEN America has documented how these groups circulate misleading claims and reports, thereby facilitating censorship and creating an environment of fear among educators and librarians.
