Rhys McClenaghan Receives MBE for Dedication to Gymnastics
Rhys McClenaghan, the Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast, has been awarded the title of MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the UK’s New Year Honours list. This recognition comes just a year after he achieved a historic milestone by winning Ireland’s first Olympic gold in gymnastics, specifically in the pommel horse category, during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The Communities Minister of Northern Ireland, Gordon Lyons, praised McClenaghan’s achievement, stating, “This is a fitting reward for his years of total dedication and countless hours of training.” The honour reflects not only McClenaghan’s athletic prowess but also his commitment to the sport and the inspirational role he plays for young athletes.
Honours for Contributors to Society
In addition to McClenaghan, several others from Northern Ireland received recognition in the New Year Honours list. Hilary McGrady, the director general of the National Trust, was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for her outstanding services to heritage. Her leadership has been pivotal in the conservation of many historic sites across the UK.
Another notable recipient, Paul Bartholomew, vice-chancellor of Ulster University, expressed his gratitude at being named a CBE for his contributions to higher education and public service. His colleague, Tara Moore, was honoured with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for over 25 years of research into the role of DNA in health and disease, highlighting the importance of scientific inquiry in advancing public health.
The honours extended to various individuals making significant contributions to their communities. Helen Mark, the presenter of BBC’s Open Country, expressed her excitement at receiving an MBE. Elizabeth Hamilton, a security guard at Stormont, was also recognised with an MBE for her years of dedicated service.
Additionally, Margaret Peacock from Coleraine received an MBE for her longstanding efforts in preparing Christmas meals for vulnerable people, showcasing the spirit of community support.
Recognition of Civil Service and Health Contributions
Two senior civil servants were acknowledged as well. Colum Boyle from the Department for Communities was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), while Ronnie Armour from the Department of Education received a CBE for his distinguished service.
The chief nursing officer for Northern Ireland, Maria McIlgorm, was awarded an OBE for her contributions to nursing, further underlining the critical role that healthcare professionals play in society, particularly in challenging times.
These honours not only celebrate individual achievements but also reflect the diverse contributions to society from various sectors, including sports, education, heritage, and healthcare. The New Year Honours list serves as a reminder of the dedication and hard work exhibited by these individuals, inspiring future generations to strive for excellence in their respective fields.
