Communities across Ireland have rallied to support Jessica “Jaye” Gibson, an 11-year-old schoolgirl from Naas, Co Kildare, who is facing a challenging battle against a rare and aggressive form of cancer. As of now, nearly €100,000 has been raised through a crowdfunding campaign to assist with her treatment and care.

Jaye was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of soft tissue cancer, last year. Her journey began in August 2022, when she experienced persistent headaches and a swollen tongue. Concerned about her symptoms, her parents, Clara and Brian Gibson, took her to the hospital for a series of tests. Initially, they were informed that she had a benign tumor on her cranial nerves at the base of her brain. However, after a follow-up MRI revealed that the tumor had doubled in size, doctors were able to perform a biopsy, ultimately leading to the cancer diagnosis.

Following this distressing news, Jaye commenced weekly chemotherapy treatments and enrolled in a clinical trial aimed at providing the best possible support for her condition. Earlier this month, Jaye relocated to Manchester with one of her parents to undergo specialized radiotherapy as part of her treatment regimen.

The GoFundMe page created by Jaye’s family and friends has been instrumental in raising funds for her medical expenses. The campaign organizers described her as a “funny, smart and vivacious” young girl who has been “stopped in her tracks” by her diagnosis. Jaye is active in her community, participating in Rathmore National School, Naas Serpents Basketball Club, and Eadestown GAA. She also enjoys singing, playing the piano, and performing drama with Stage Door & More and Kill Musical and Dramatic Society.

The message on the GoFundMe page emphasizes Jaye’s bravery in facing the challenges of chemotherapy, including hair loss and nerve damage, with a positive attitude. Her siblings, Nathan and Naomi, have been steadfast supporters throughout her treatment, providing her with love and encouragement.

The fundraiser has already surpassed €99,300 of its €120,000 goal, demonstrating the overwhelming support from the community. The organizers express gratitude to donors, stating, “Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly towards her treatment, care, and day-to-day expenses.” They also encourage those unable to contribute financially to share the campaign and keep Jaye in their thoughts and prayers.

As support continues to pour in, Jaye’s family is focused on maintaining a hopeful environment for her recovery. The generosity of the community not only alleviates the financial burden but also reinforces their commitment to keeping Jaye surrounded by love and positivity during this difficult time.
