Staff at Wexford General Hospital are currently addressing a Covid-19 outbreak that has affected several wards. This marks the second such incident within two months at the 280-bed hospital. The outbreak follows the recent Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, a large music event that attracted significant crowds to the town last week. Reports indicate that multiple attendees began feeling unwell during or shortly after the festival and subsequently tested positive for the virus.

In a statement released today, Wexford General Hospital confirmed that it is actively managing the outbreak. Hospital management emphasized that patient services remain unaffected and that visiting hours continue without restrictions at this time. However, they are closely monitoring the situation, which may lead to future changes.

A spokesperson for the hospital urged the public to refrain from visiting if they exhibit any respiratory or Covid-19 symptoms. The statement also highlighted that masks may be required in certain areas of the hospital. Visitors are requested to adhere to standard visiting hours unless in exceptional compassionate circumstances and to avoid gathering in hospital corridors or waiting areas.

Wexford General Hospital expressed gratitude for public cooperation during this period, noting that the measures are “temporary but necessary” to protect the health of patients, staff, and visitors. As of this morning, there are 210 individuals hospitalized due to Covid-19, with nine patients in intensive care units fighting serious complications.

Understanding the New Covid Variant and Symptoms

The emergence of the XFG variant, also referred to as Stratus, has been identified as a contributing factor to the recent rise in Covid-19 cases. According to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre in Ireland, this variant presents symptoms that can easily be overlooked.

Dr. Kaywaan Khan, founder of the Hannah London Clinic, shared insights on the symptoms associated with this new variant, noting that one distinct sign is a hoarse or raspy voice, which may appear before the more commonly recognized symptoms of Covid-19.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has reiterated the importance of being aware of various symptoms, which now include:

– High temperature
– Dry cough
– Fatigue
– Loss or change to sense of smell or taste
– Runny or blocked nose
– Conjunctivitis
– Sore throat
– Headache
– Muscle or joint pain
– Different types of skin rash
– Nausea or vomiting
– Diarrhoea
– Chills
– Dizziness

Severe symptoms may include shortness of breath, loss of appetite, confusion, pain or pressure in the chest, and fever. It’s important to note that individuals may not experience all symptoms, and some may be mild.

If anyone develops symptoms of Covid-19, they are advised to remain at home until 48 hours after their symptoms have significantly improved. It is equally crucial to minimize contact with others, particularly those who may be more vulnerable to the virus. Parents of infants aged three months or younger who notice Covid-19 symptoms should contact their general practitioner for guidance.

As the situation evolves, Wexford General Hospital continues to prioritize the health and safety of its community while managing this outbreak effectively.
