Browne described the moment as pivotal, stating, “I kind of feel, not only did I have to explain myself to a lot of people, I had to go back to my friends then and realized, ‘OK I was tricked into this.’”

Browne had forged a personal connection with Carey, having known him through his father, who was also a notable figure in the handball sports community. Initially, Carey reached out to Browne under the pretense of needing financial assistance for a critical trip to Seattle for cancer treatment. After contributing to Carey’s alleged medical expenses, Browne was left in the dark when he attempted to follow up on the promised treatment.

Victims like Thomas Butler, who donated €16,000 to Carey, expressed deep personal pain upon discovering the truth. Butler highlighted the emotional turmoil, stating, “The revelation was gut-wrenching personally for me as both my parents died of cancer.” He also pointed out his previous volunteer work with the Irish Cancer Society, emphasizing the betrayal felt when realizing that Carey was obtaining funds through deceitful means.

Another victim, Aidan Mulligan, shared his experience of receiving a phone call from Carey offering condolences for the death of Mulligan’s wife, before pivoting to ask for financial support for treatment. Mulligan ended up sending Carey €8,500, only to later learn of the fraudulent nature of the request.
