HSE Health App Surpasses 210,000 Downloads in First Year

The Health Service Executive (HSE) Health App has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 210,000 downloads since its launch in February 2025. Currently, more than 125,000 users are registered on the platform, which offers a variety of features aimed at enhancing patient engagement and health management.

Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill expressed her enthusiasm regarding these figures, urging more individuals to register and take advantage of the app’s offerings. The application provides valuable resources, including information on GP referrals, hospital waiting lists for both day case and inpatient care, as well as expanded data for patients enrolled in the Structured Chronic Disease Management Programme.

“It’s fantastic to see so many people already using the HSE Health App,” said Minister MacNeill. “This app is transforming how patients manage their health, from viewing hospital appointments to checking GP referrals and vaccination records. We’re committed to evolving the app to meet patient needs.”

App Features and Future Developments

According to Damien McCallion, Chief Technology and Transformation Officer at HSE, the introduction of waiting list information and GP referral features has empowered patients with timely updates regarding their healthcare journeys. “We are transforming and improving healthcare for people in Ireland through Digital for Care,” McCallion noted, highlighting the app as part of a broader initiative.

The latest version of the app allows users to access a range of features, enhancing usability and overall value. Anticipated updates throughout 2026 include tools aimed at promoting physical activity, direct access to scans and test results, and expanded access to personal health data, such as hospital and community appointments. Users will also be able to check wait times for scheduled tests and receive tailored support for managing chronic conditions.

Healthcare Demand and Public Engagement

The popularity of the app coincides with an expected surge in demand for healthcare services as health facilities brace for the traditionally busy start to the year. The first week of January is known for high patient volumes due to various factors, including deferred care from the holiday period and a general increase in healthcare needs.

Bernard Gloster, CEO of HSE, remarked on the positive trends in patient flow during the holiday season, stating, “We have had an exceptionally positive improvement in patient flow over both the Christmas and the high flu season.” However, he cautioned that the upcoming week will likely present challenges due to elevated demand.

The HSE has made provisions to address potential strain on services, including enhancing GP hours and ensuring that all Primary Care Centres remain operational. Community-based nursing and allied health professionals also stand ready to provide additional support.

Despite these efforts, patients should be prepared for possible waiting times, as services may experience increased demand. “Patients will be assessed and treated based on their needs and condition,” Gloster added. “We encourage the public to seek care when necessary and to utilize appropriate healthcare options to ensure timely assistance.”

With weather conditions potentially complicating access to services in some regions, the HSE appeals to the public for cooperation and respect towards healthcare staff. “While we have made significant progress, we expect this week to be challenging, and working together with the public, we can manage the demand effectively,” Gloster emphasized.
