The Health Service Executive (HSE) has been mandated to identify an appropriate site for a new hospital facility in the vicinity of University Hospital Limerick. This directive follows discussions in the Dáil Éireann, where Deputy Willie O’Dea raised concerns regarding the progress of hospital infrastructure in the Mid-West region. The urgency of this matter is underscored by growing demands for healthcare services.

During a recent session in the Dáil, Deputy O’Dea questioned the Taoiseach about an announcement made by the Minister for Health concerning hospital facilities. He expressed his support for the government’s acceptance of proposals aimed at improving healthcare, noting that these were grounded in a report from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) that emphasized patient safety.

Concerns Over Site Acquisition and Project Management

Deputy O’Dea specifically inquired whether a site had been identified and secured for the proposed new building near the Dooradoyle site. He pointed out that when the Minister was questioned about this the previous day, she indicated that commercial considerations prevented her from providing details. “Surely there are no commercial considerations in asking whether the site has been acquired, when it will be acquired and whether we will be told when it has been acquired,” he stated.

In addition to site acquisition, O’Dea pressed for information on the establishment of a project management board. He highlighted the need for urgency, given that the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) projected an additional 600 hospital-type beds would be necessary in the region over the next 15 years, nearly doubling the current capacity at University Hospital Limerick.

Government Response and Future Steps

A spokesperson for the Minister confirmed that the HSE has been tasked with securing a suitable adjacent site. However, the spokesperson was unable to provide specific information on whether this site has been acquired. “The Minister has mandated the HSE to secure an available appropriate adjacent site,” the representative stated.

Furthermore, the spokesperson noted that a standard governance structure and project board would need to be established by the HSE to facilitate the reallocation of services from the main Dooradoyle site. “My understanding is the project board has not yet been established, but it will be imminently, once we get the other site,” the spokesperson added.

To advance plans for a new Model 3 hospital, which includes an emergency department, the Minister and the Department will develop a strategic plan focused on the incremental reconfiguration and investment in healthcare services in the Mid-West region. The ongoing discussions indicate a commitment to improving healthcare delivery, which many stakeholders see as a significant and necessary development.

As the situation evolves, officials and community members alike await further information on the site selection process and the establishment of the project management board, crucial steps towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the region.
