HSE Tasked with Securing Site for New Limerick Hospital
A new hospital building is on the horizon for the Mid West region of Ireland, as the Health Service Executive (HSE) has been mandated to locate an appropriate site. The announcement follows a discussion in the Dáil, where Deputy Willie O’Dea sought clarity on the government’s plans regarding hospital facilities near University Hospital Limerick.
During the session, O’Dea expressed support for the proposals put forth by the Minister for Health, which were informed by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report emphasizing patient safety. He inquired whether a site for the new building near the Dooradoyle area has been identified and secured. The Minister had previously refrained from disclosing details due to commercial considerations, leading O’Dea to question the transparency of the process.
O’Dea emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting that the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) projects a need for an additional 600 hospital-type beds in the region over the next 15 years, nearly doubling the current capacity at University Hospital Limerick. He pressed the Taoiseach for assurances regarding the provision of sufficient capital to ensure the project moves forward within the necessary timeframe.
In response, a spokesperson for the Minister confirmed that the HSE has been directed to secure an appropriate site. The spokesperson indicated that while there is no current confirmation of a site acquisition, the HSE has been given the mandate to proceed.
Project Management and Future Developments
The spokesperson also addressed the establishment of a governance structure and project management board, which are essential for overseeing the project’s progress. Although the project board has not yet been formed, it is expected to be established shortly after the site acquisition.
The development of a strategic plan for healthcare services in the Mid West region is also underway. This plan will focus on the incremental reconfiguration and investment needed to support the proposed Model 3 hospital, which will include an emergency department.
The Minister and the Department of Health are committed to ensuring that unnecessary services are relocated from the main Dooradoyle site to improve efficiency in patient care. These changes aim to enhance the overall healthcare landscape in the region, aligning with the recommendations highlighted in the HIQA report.
As discussions continue, the community eagerly awaits further updates on the site selection and the establishment of the project management structure, marking a significant step toward improving healthcare facilities in the Mid West.
