Former England manager and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan has been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 74. Keegan was recently hospitalized due to ongoing abdominal symptoms, leading to further tests that confirmed the diagnosis. The family’s statement, shared by Newcastle United, indicated that he is currently undergoing treatment.

In their statement, Keegan’s family expressed gratitude to the medical team for their care, while requesting privacy during this challenging time. The family also noted that they would not be making any further public comments regarding his condition.

Keegan’s Remarkable Career

Kevin Keegan began his professional career at Scunthorpe United before joining Liverpool in 1971, under the management of Bill Shankly. During his time at Liverpool, he won the First Division title three times, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Cup twice, culminating in victory at the 1977 European Cup.

Throughout his illustrious career, Keegan was recognized as one of football’s greats, earning the title of European Footballer of the Year twice while playing for Hamburg. After returning to England, he played for Southampton and Newcastle United, retiring as a player in 1984. Keegan earned 63 England caps and scored 21 goals, participating in the 1982 World Cup and later serving as captain of the national team.

Management Journey and Legacy

Keegan transitioned into management in 1992 at Newcastle United, leading the team back to the Premier League and coming close to winning the title in the 1995/96 season, ultimately finishing second to Manchester United. After departing St James’ Park in 1997, he had a brief spell at Fulham before taking over as England manager in 1999.

His tenure with the national team was marked by a disappointing performance at Euro 2000, leading to his resignation following a loss to Germany at Wembley Stadium. Keegan later managed Manchester City before announcing his retirement from football in 2005.

In 2008, Keegan made a heartfelt return to Newcastle but left after just eight months due to conflicts with the club’s board and owner Mike Ashley.

Following the announcement of his illness, Liverpool expressed their support, stating that the “thoughts and support of everyone” at the club are with Keegan, his family, and friends during this difficult time. As fans and fellow professionals rally behind him, the football community remains hopeful for his recovery.
