Mary Lou McDonald Embraces Kneecap’s Success, Eyes Mosh Pit
Mary Lou McDonald, leader of Sinn Féin, has expressed her newfound appreciation for the Belfast rap trio Kneecap, admitting that she initially doubted their potential for success due to their controversial name. In a recent interview with the Irish Mirror, McDonald stated she would love to experience being in a mosh pit at one of their concerts, highlighting how the group has significantly contributed to the revitalization of the Irish language.
Kneecap, composed of members Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara, and DJ Próvai, has gained widespread acclaim in recent years. Their music, which blends Irish and English lyrics, has resonated with many, making them a notable force in contemporary Irish culture. McDonald acknowledged their impact, stating that they have become “the standard bearers” for the Irish language.
Reflecting on her past reservations, McDonald noted, “They have been incredibly successful with the Kneecap name. I remember when they came on the scene first, and I actually could not credit that any group would call itself Kneecap and be so successful.” She added, “I’ve loved their stuff. It’s their name, I like them and I think they’re great.”
Kneecap’s lyrics often address political themes, with songs such as “Get your Brits Out” and “We’re back keeping diabetic politicians raging” garnering attention for their bold statements. McDonald mentioned her favorite track, “CEARTA,” which gained significant popularity despite being banned by RTÉ due to its explicit content and references to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). She praised the song, stating, “I like CEARTA, that’s a great song. It’s very clever music. It has given a kind of currency and vibrancy to Gaeilge that’s been unmatched.”
The Sinn Féin leader recently attended a sold-out Kneecap gig at the 3Arena but refrained from joining the mosh pit, a signature feature of their performances. Describing the experience, she said, “It was great craic. It was an incredible gig. The energy is unbelievable. I wasn’t in the mosh pit sadly, I would’ve preferred to have been in the mosh pit, maybe next time.”
McDonald expressed pride in the younger generation’s passion for the Irish language and culture. She remarked, “I think we have a generation of young Irish people I’m really proud of. I think they will change the world, actually, if we let them.” She emphasized the importance of supporting the next generation to ensure they flourish and contribute to a united Ireland.
In a related effort to promote the Irish language, President Catherine Connolly aims to make it the working language in Áras an Uachtaráin. Connolly, who won a significant election with 63 percent of the vote against Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys, has garnered attention for her engaging approach during the campaign. McDonald highlighted a memorable moment when Connolly showcased her keepie-uppie skills, which resonated strongly with young voters.
“The highlight of the campaign itself was the children and the keepie-uppies,” McDonald said. “They now firmly believe that they were central to Catherine actually getting elected. She came to their flats like presidential candidates don’t come to inner city blocks of flats and spend time with them.”
As Kneecap continues to dominate the music scene and inspire a new generation, McDonald remains enthusiastic about their role in shaping the future of Irish culture and language. With a commitment to fostering an environment where young voices can thrive, she looks forward to a vibrant cultural landscape in Ireland.
