Mental Health Charity Promotes In-Person Activities Over Screen Time
A mental health charity is calling on individuals to replace screen time with in-person activities as a way to enhance well-being in 2026. AWARE Northern Ireland emphasizes the risks associated with excessive online engagement, particularly through social media platforms, which can contribute to feelings of anxiety and isolation.
Nigel Fyffe, a representative from AWARE, highlighted the increase in stress levels as individuals navigate the complexities of social media during the New Year. Fyffe stated, “As we enter 2026, it is crucial to recognize that while technology connects us, it can also overwhelm us.” He encourages people to engage in face-to-face interactions, which can foster more meaningful connections and improve mental health.
Social media usage has surged globally, particularly during the pandemic, but this trend has raised concerns about its impact on mental health. Experts note that the constant comparison and pressure to maintain an online presence can lead to detrimental effects, particularly among younger demographics.
AWARE Northern Ireland is urging communities to participate in local activities, such as sports, arts, and volunteering, which can facilitate new friendships and support networks. The charity is organizing events throughout the year aimed at promoting mental wellness through direct engagement rather than online interactions.
The call to action comes at a time when many individuals are reflecting on their lifestyles and making resolutions for the year ahead. Fyffe emphasizes that taking the first step towards in-person activities can significantly benefit mental health. He encourages everyone to limit their screen time and explore local resources available for personal growth and social interaction.
In addition, AWARE is launching a campaign that includes workshops and community meet-ups to further support its mission. By providing opportunities for people to connect in person, the charity aims to create a supportive environment that emphasizes the importance of real-world relationships.
As the effects of pandemic-related isolation linger, AWARE Northern Ireland’s initiative serves as a reminder of the value of personal connections in enhancing mental health. The charity hopes that by prioritizing face-to-face interactions, individuals will experience a greater sense of community and belonging, ultimately leading to improved overall well-being.
