Mental Health Charity Promotes In-Person Activities Over Screens
A mental health charity is actively encouraging individuals to prioritize in-person activities over screen time as part of a broader initiative to address mental well-being. On January 11, 2026, AWARE Northern Ireland released a statement highlighting the dangers associated with excessive online engagement, particularly through social media platforms.
The organization’s spokesperson, Nigel Fyffe, emphasized the overwhelming nature of social media, especially as people transition into the new year. Fyffe pointed out that while digital connections can be beneficial, they often lead to feelings of isolation and anxiety, which can negatively impact mental health.
“Social media can be a double-edged sword,” Fyffe stated. “While it offers a way to connect, it can also heighten feelings of inadequacy and stress. We want to remind people that real-life interactions can provide the emotional support they need.”
AWARE Northern Ireland is calling on the public to engage in various activities that foster community interaction and personal connections. These could include participating in local clubs, attending events, or simply spending time with family and friends. The charity believes that these face-to-face interactions can significantly improve mental well-being and help combat the adverse effects of prolonged screen time.
This initiative comes at a time when mental health issues are increasingly prevalent, particularly among younger populations. Reports indicate that many individuals are spending upwards of 7 hours per day in front of screens, leading to concerns about the long-term implications for mental health.
In response, AWARE Northern Ireland is launching a series of community events aimed at promoting mental health awareness and encouraging participation in offline activities. These events will feature workshops, social gatherings, and support groups designed to create a welcoming environment where individuals can share their experiences and support one another.
Fyffe concluded with a strong message: “We urge everyone to take a step back from their screens and reconnect with the world around them. The benefits of in-person interaction cannot be overstated, especially as we navigate the challenges of modern life.”
The charity’s appeal resonates widely as many individuals reflect on their digital habits in the new year. AWARE Northern Ireland’s initiative is a timely reminder of the importance of balancing online and offline lives to foster better mental health.
