Organ Donations Plummet 23% in 2025, Urgent Action Needed
Organ donations in Ireland have seen a significant decline, dropping by 23% in 2025. A total of 202 transplant operations were performed this year, compared to previous years, prompting the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) to call for immediate government investment to address this troubling trend.
Currently, there are nearly 700 individuals on waiting lists for organ transplants, with approximately 80 percent of those requiring kidney operations. This sharp decrease in donations raises serious concerns about the availability of life-saving organs for patients in need.
Colin White, the National Advocacy Manager at the IKA, emphasized that there is a widespread misconception surrounding organ donation. Many people believe that only young individuals are eligible to donate organs. White stated, “We need to educate the public that people of all ages can be organ donors, which could help alleviate the shortage.”
The decline in organ donations underscores the necessity for increased public awareness and educational campaigns aimed at dispelling myths about the organ donation process. The IKA is urging both the government and the public to take action to ensure that potential donors are not overlooked.
In light of these statistics, the IKA is advocating for a robust investment in organ donation initiatives. Addressing this issue is crucial, not just for the nearly 700 people currently waiting for transplants, but also for the broader healthcare system, which relies on an adequate supply of organs to save lives.
As the conversation around organ donation continues, stakeholders are hopeful that greater awareness and understanding will lead to a resurgence in donations, ultimately benefiting those in desperate need of transplants.
