Over 2,000 Vaccines Administered to Long-Term Care Residents
More than 2,000 vaccines have been successfully administered this winter to residents and staff in long-term care facilities by the HSE Mid West Health and Wellbeing Immunisation Team. The team has focused on delivering both flu and COVID-19 vaccines across the region, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive critical protection during the flu season.
The vaccination programme, which runs from September 2023 to February 2024, has recorded a remarkable uptake rate of approximately 88 percent for the flu vaccine among residents. As of now, a total of 2,008 flu vaccinations have been provided, highlighting the community’s commitment to safeguarding health in these facilities.
Significance of the Vaccination Programme
According to Niamh O’Connor, clinical nurse manager at HSE Mid West Health and Wellbeing, the vaccination initiative is particularly vital as hospitalisations due to flu have been increasing significantly. “This programme is especially important for protecting those who are more vulnerable,” O’Connor stated. The proactive approach aims to mitigate health risks associated with flu and COVID-19 during peak seasons.
Vaccinator Nora Mullane elaborated on the extensive work involved in the vaccination process. “There has been an excellent response from residents of the facilities. While vaccination is voluntary, we encourage it due to the risks associated with flu and COVID-19,” she explained. The high uptake rates reflect the community’s trust in the health services provided.
Mullane’s day typically begins around 08:00, starting with the collection of vaccines and ensuring proper storage conditions are maintained. The team visits various nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and, when necessary, provides vaccinations in the homes of those deemed housebound.
After administering the vaccine, residents are monitored for 15 minutes to check for any adverse reactions. Mullane confirmed, “We never leave the nursing home until a half-hour after the final vaccination.” This careful monitoring underscores the team’s commitment to safety and well-being.
Accessibility of Vaccines
Flu vaccines are currently available at participating GP clinics and pharmacies. For healthcare workers, free flu vaccines are provided in staff vaccination clinics as well as in community settings at GPs and pharmacies. Additionally, all children aged two to 17 years are recommended to receive the free flu vaccine, ensuring that younger populations are also protected.
This comprehensive vaccination effort exemplifies the importance of community health initiatives in safeguarding vulnerable populations, especially during the winter months when respiratory illnesses are more prevalent. The ongoing commitment to public health is evident in the high participation rates and the proactive measures taken by health professionals in the region.
