Rising Health Insurance Costs Spark Debate on Value Across Ireland

The introduction of Sláintecare reforms is influencing the rising costs of private health insurance in Ireland. Following recent price increases announced by major providers such as VHI, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health, many are questioning whether private health insurance remains a worthwhile investment.
According to Dr. Brian Turner, a health economist at University College Cork (UCC), nearly 46% of the population believes that private health insurance is still necessary. He noted that a significant factor driving this sentiment is the uncertainty surrounding timely treatment in the public healthcare system. “We see significant wait times for treatment in some cases in the public system,” Dr. Turner explained during a recent discussion on Lunchtime Live.
As Sláintecare reforms aim to improve public health services, Dr. Turner pointed out that people are likely to hold onto their private insurance until they can clearly see the benefits of these changes. “People will want to see the fruits of the labour for Sláintecare before they actually decide to give up their health insurance,” he stated.
The personal experiences of individuals further illustrate this complex decision. One listener, Sheila, shared her journey through the public healthcare system after being diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago. “All of my diagnosis, treatment management, everything, went through the public healthcare system,” Sheila recounted. She expressed satisfaction with the care she received, stating, “I could not have asked for better care, I could not have received better care anywhere.”
Despite her positive experience, Sheila has reduced her private health coverage in response to escalating costs. “Private health is a luxury, and if you afford it good and well,” she reflected. She highlighted a common concern among many, noting, “An awful lot of people are actually cutting other things to provide health insurance, because there is a feeling that if you don’t have it, you’re not going to get the care you need.”
With ongoing discussions surrounding the future of health insurance in Ireland, the balance between public and private healthcare continues to be a pressing issue. As the Sláintecare reforms unfold, stakeholders are closely monitoring the impact on both costs and the quality of care provided.
The debate over the value of private health insurance is likely to evolve as more individuals weigh their options, influenced by personal experiences and the changing landscape of health services in Ireland.
