Teenager Faces Life with Rare Condition Limiting Diet to Three Foods
A teenager from Cork, Ireland, has become one of fewer than 500 individuals globally diagnosed with an exceptionally rare condition, which restricts her diet to just three foods: bread, rice, and boiled vegetables. Nineteen-year-old Eadain Hegarty learned she had primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL) shortly before her first birthday, after enduring a series of health challenges throughout her early childhood.
This rare disorder leads to a leaky and inflamed small intestine, causing significant loss of essential proteins and vital nutrients. As a result, Eadain must adhere to a severely limited diet that allows her fat intake to remain below half a gram per meal. For context, just one slice of cheese pizza contains around 10 grams of fat, making it unsuitable for her dietary needs.
Childhood Challenges and Diagnosis
Eadain’s journey with this condition has not been easy. She recalls being frequently ill as a baby, with symptoms that included going through 12 diapers a day and numerous hospital visits. Doctors at Children’s Health Ireland suggested her condition might be PIL after observing her symptoms. Following a barium test, the diagnosis was confirmed.
People with intestinal lymphangiectasia often experience a range of symptoms, including leg swelling, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, and severe fatigue. Eadain’s health saw improvement when she began following a strict low-fat diet, a relief for both her and her parents. “They were able to change my diet and see a positive effect,” she noted.
Adapting to Life with PIL
Over the years, the impact of Eadain’s condition has affected her social life in subtle yet significant ways. She remembers her mother preparing special meals for her when she attended parties, where other children enjoyed pizzas while she had to settle for burgers. “I felt like they were looking at me differently,” she recalled, highlighting the emotional toll of her dietary restrictions.
Now that she is an adult, Eadain faces additional challenges when dining out. When indulging in higher-fat foods, she experiences symptoms akin to “IBS on steroids.” To ensure her needs are met, Eadain often calls ahead to restaurants to confirm whether they can accommodate her dietary restrictions. This process can lead to frustration, especially when restaurants are unable to deliver on their promises.
She tends to dine at familiar establishments that understand her medical requirements. “If they suggest dinner, it’s going to have to be a Chinese,” she explained, detailing her typical order of boiled rice, steamed chicken, and vegetables.
Despite these limitations, Eadain maintains a light-hearted attitude towards her situation. She often uses the fact that certain dog breeds, like Yorkshire terriers, can also develop this rare condition as an icebreaker in social settings.
Eadain’s health challenges do not end with PIL; she also deals with chronic pain, migraines, endometriosis, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Each new day presents unique obstacles, but Eadain approaches life with resilience and determination.
Her diet, while restricted, includes choices like toast or bagels with jam for breakfast, pasta with chicken or turkey for lunch, and chicken or turkey with rice or potatoes alongside carrots for dinner. For snacks, she opts for jelly sweets.
Eadain’s story highlights the importance of understanding and accommodating individuals with rare health conditions, as they navigate their daily lives with courage and resolve.
