Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Sparks Investigation in Italy
A 12-year-old girl, Azzurra Breda, tragically passed away on December 31, 2023, after doctors dismissed her symptoms as a simple case of influenza. Initially taken to a paediatric emergency department due to a fever and breathing difficulties, Azzurra was sent home following an examination that concluded her condition was non-threatening.
Upon returning to her home in Sant’Angelo di Piove di Sacco, located southeast of Padua, Italy, Azzurra’s health deteriorated rapidly, with her temperature soaring to 40 degrees Celsius. Her concerned parents, Valentina and Mattia Breda, brought her back to the emergency department the following day. This time, she was admitted to intensive care, but sadly, she succumbed to pneumonia later that morning.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is currently under way. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for January 12, 2024. The loss of Azzurra has deeply affected her community, with local officials expressing their condolences.
Azzurra was not only a talented dancer but also excelled in academics and played the piano for four years. Her parents described her as athletic and energetic, with no known pre-existing health conditions. In October, she had successfully passed sports medical examinations, indicating robust health. She is survived by her parents and a younger sister.
Mayor Guido Carlin paid tribute to Azzurra, stating, “She was a well-known and much-loved girl – quiet, polite and actively involved in village life and in initiatives organised by the council.” He recalled seeing her shortly before Christmas and noted her infectious smile.
Pneumonia, the condition that ultimately led to Azzurra’s death, is characterized by inflammation of the lungs, often resulting from an infection. The NHS states that while most patients recover within two to four weeks, certain groups, including children and the elderly, face a higher risk of severe illness. Symptoms commonly include coughing, shortness of breath, and high fever.
Medical professionals emphasize the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or chest pain. The health service advises against driving oneself to the hospital in emergencies, urging individuals to call for an ambulance instead.
As the community mourns the loss of a bright young girl, questions remain about the medical response she received. The outcome of the investigation may hold answers that could prevent similar tragedies in the future.
