Urgent Recall of Brie Mariotte Cheese Due to Listeria Concerns

A significant recall has been initiated for the popular cheese product, **Brie Mariotte**, due to concerns regarding potential contamination with **Listeria monocytogenes**. The **Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)** issued a For Action notice today, warning consumers of the health risks associated with consuming the affected batches.
Multiple batches of Brie Mariotte, which originates from **France**, are being recalled. The affected products include **1 kg packages** with best before dates up to and including **August 30, 2025**, as well as all pack sizes with use-by dates between **August 6, 2025**, and **August 12, 2025**. Retailers, including major outlets like **Dunnes Stores**, are instructed to remove the implicated cheese from sale immediately.
Health Risks and Symptoms of Listeriosis
The FSAI has emphasized that consumers should not consume any of the recalled products. While there is currently no evidence linking this recall to other recent listeriosis outbreaks, the potential for serious health complications remains a concern. Symptoms of listeriosis can range from mild flu-like signs to severe complications, particularly in vulnerable populations. These groups include pregnant women, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly.
According to the **Health Protection Surveillance Centre**, symptoms of listeriosis may include fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and diarrhea. In more serious cases, the infection can lead to complications involving the central nervous system, manifesting as meningitis or septicemia. These severe symptoms may include headaches, confusion, or even convulsions.
Related Cheese Recalls and Consumer Guidance
This recall follows another recent incident involving cheese products sold at **SuperValu**, which were also found to potentially carry **Listeria monocytogenes**. The affected products included **SuperValu Goat’s Cheese** with use-by dates of **August 7** and **August 12**, along with “Freshly Prepared by Our Cheesemongers Goat’s Cheese” and “SuperValu Chevre Log” in various package sizes.
The FSAI remains vigilant, urging manufacturers and retailers to act swiftly to remove contaminated batches from the market. Recall notices will be displayed at points of sale to inform consumers.
As a precaution, consumers are advised to check their fridges for any of the implicated products and to dispose of them safely. The FSAI continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
