Urgent Recall of Brie Mariotte Cheese Due to Listeria Risk

A significant recall of the popular cheese product, Brie Mariotte, has been initiated due to concerns over the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued this urgent recall on March 15, 2024, highlighting serious health risks associated with consumption of the affected batches.
Various batches of Brie Mariotte, imported from France, are being recalled. The FSAI’s notification, numbered 2025.43, specifies that cheese packaged in 1 kg units with best before dates up to and including August 30, 2025, along with all pack sizes with use-by dates from August 6, 2025, to August 13, 2025, are implicated. Retailers, including Dunnes Stores, are instructed to remove these products from sale immediately.
The FSAI has called for wholesalers and distributors to inform affected customers promptly and to display recall notices at points of sale. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume the recalled products.
Health Risks and Symptoms
Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, can manifest with mild flu-like symptoms or may remain asymptomatic. According to the FSAI, symptoms may include fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, infants, and the elderly, the infection can lead to serious complications like meningitis and septicemia. Symptoms indicating more severe illness may include a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
The FSAI has clarified that there is no current evidence linking this recall to a previous listeriosis outbreak associated with ready-to-heat meals or the recent recall of spinach and mixed leaves products.
Additional Cheese Recalls
This recall follows another incident involving several goat’s cheese products from SuperValu, also due to potential Listeria contamination. The FSAI urged consumers to be vigilant regarding these products as well, which include “SuperValu Goat’s Cheese” with use-by dates of August 7 and August 12, and “Freshly Prepared by Our Cheesemongers Goat’s Cheese,” with use-by dates of August 11 and August 12.
The FSAI continues to stress the importance of adhering to food safety protocols and urges consumers to check their refrigerators for any of the recalled items. As the situation develops, consumers are advised to follow updates from the FSAI and other health authorities regarding food safety and recalls.
