Urgent Recall of SMA Baby Formula Due to Toxin Risk
Parents in Ireland are being advised against feeding specific batches of the popular SMA baby formula due to the potential presence of a harmful toxin. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced that Nestlé is voluntarily recalling certain batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula, as they may contain cereulide, a toxin associated with food poisoning.
Cereulide is produced by some strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The FSAI emphasized that this recall is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting public health. To date, there have been no reported cases of illness linked to the affected products.
Details of the Recall
The FSAI has issued specific guidance for parents, guardians, and caregivers who may have the recalled products in their homes. They recommend checking for batch codes on the base of the tin or box for powdered formulas, or on the outer packaging and sides of containers for ready-to-feed formulas.
The FSAI cautioned that the cereulide toxin is extremely heat resistant and can lead to symptoms such as nausea and severe vomiting if ingested. Symptoms may appear within five hours of consumption, and the duration of illness typically lasts between six to twenty-four hours.
The statement from the FSAI reads:
“If no symptoms are displayed, nothing further needs to be done. If a parent, guardian or caregiver is concerned about the health of their infant or young child, they should contact a healthcare professional.”
How to Contact Nestlé
Nestlé is urging customers who have purchased any of the affected batches to reach out for assistance. They can do so through their online form by submitting a photo of the product alongside the batch code. Alternatively, customers can call their careline at 1800 931 832 in Ireland or 0800 0 81 81 80 in the United Kingdom.
This recall serves as a critical reminder for parents to remain vigilant regarding the safety of food products intended for infants. The FSAI continues to monitor the situation and has reassured the public that they will provide further updates as necessary.
