Community Mourns Ardara Businessman Stephen McCahill, 65

The local community in Ardara, County Donegal, is grieving the loss of prominent businessman Stephen McCahill, who was found dead at his home early on March 1, 2024. The 65-year-old’s untimely death has prompted an outpouring of tributes, highlighting his significant contributions to community development and business in the region. A man in his 30s has been arrested by Gardai and is currently being questioned in connection with the incident.

Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher, a lifelong friend of McCahill, expressed deep sorrow over the news, stating that the beginning of the new year has been overshadowed by this tragic event. Gallagher described McCahill as a person with an extraordinary flair for community development, whose impact would be felt for years to come. “Stephen had a massive flair and drive for community development, and his efforts were widely known in Ardara and further afield,” Gallagher said.

In recognition of his contributions, McCahill was named Donegal Person of the Year in 2016, an award that Gallagher noted was well-deserved. McCahill returned to Donegal in 1981 to work with Campbell Seafoods in Killybegs, where he served as a quality control manager. Over the years, he developed a strong association with the fishing sector before becoming a well-respected business figure in Ardara, managing a local public house and an auctioneers’ company.

The loss of McCahill has affected not only his family but also the wider community. Gallagher urged local residents to rally around the McCahill and Maloney families during this difficult time. “The events of the past twenty-four hours will weigh extremely heavy on this close-knit local community,” he stated.

In a poignant reflection, Gallagher quoted the late writer and journalist Joan Didion, saying, “Grief has no distance, it comes in waves, in paroxysms, sudden apprehensions that weaken the knees and blinds the eyes and obliterates the dailiness of life.”

McCahill is survived by his wife, Marietta, and their two children, Stephen and Gemma. The Ardara GAA Club, where McCahill held multiple roles, including Chairman and Treasurer, also expressed their condolences. A spokesperson for the club said, “As a Club & Parish, we are numb at the tragic death of former Chairman, Treasurer, & Community Leader.” All planned club activities have been suspended in his memory.

The Glenties Town Team, a community initiative dedicated to promoting local development, expressed deep sadness over McCahill’s passing. A spokesperson remarked on his unwavering support for the town and his genuine care for people beyond his own community. “His encouragement and positivity made a real difference, and his commitment to community life was clear to all who knew him,” they stated.
