Community Mourns Stephen McCahill Following Tragic Death
The tragic death of Donegal businessman Stephen McCahill has left a profound impact on the local community, as mourners gathered for his funeral mass at the Church of the Holy Family in Ardara on Saturday. Mr. McCahill, who was murdered earlier this week, was remembered for his extensive contributions to the area and was named Donegal Person of the Year in 2016.
The assault occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Monday at a residence in Ardara. Emergency services responded, but Mr. McCahill was pronounced dead at the scene. A man, identified as Michael Maloney, aged 32, has since been charged with his murder and appeared in court on Tuesday evening.
During the funeral service, Father Aodhan Cannon addressed the gathering, which included Mr. McCahill’s wife, Martina, children, granddaughter, and many friends. He conveyed the heartbreak felt by the community, stating, “Stephen’s death is a terrible tragedy and has left a huge void in the lives of those who love him.” Father Cannon emphasized that the day’s ceremony offered a sense of hope amid the grief.
The service featured various symbols representing significant aspects of Mr. McCahill’s life. A wooden coffin adorned with flowers held items that illustrated his pride in co-owning the Corner House bar, a place where he fostered an atmosphere of welcome and camaraderie. Although he personally did not consume alcohol, he cherished the vibrant life of the bar, which became a hub for music and storytelling.
Father Cannon remarked on Mr. McCahill’s “fierce loyalty” to the fishing industry and the many friendships he cultivated. The Donegal Person of the Year award highlighted his dedicated work behind the scenes, often helping individuals in a personal capacity rather than seeking public recognition. “This award stands as a symbol of a life lived generously for the good of the whole community,” he stated.
The final symbol presented during the mass was a family photograph, underscoring the importance of his loved ones. The heartfelt tributes paid to Mr. McCahill reflect the significant role he played in both his family’s lives and the broader Ardara community.
As the investigation into his tragic death continues, the people of Ardara are left to reflect on the legacy of a man known for his kindness, community spirit, and unwavering dedication.
