Kerry Rose Reveals Strict Rules Behind Rose of Tralee Festival

The Rose of Tralee festival has returned, showcasing the dedication and rigorous standards placed on its contestants. Laura Daly, the Kerry Rose from Ballymacelligott, shared insights on the strict regulations designed to ensure the well-being and presentation of the participants. The festival commenced with a series of events leading up to the televised portions on August 21 and August 22, 2023.

Daly, aged 23, highlighted the challenges competitors face during the festival. “There’s a mixture of things,” she stated in an interview with the Irish Mirror. “But you know what, they’re put in place in a sense that keeps us safe, keeps us well, keeps us going, because it is a very long process.” She emphasized the importance of structured schedules and guidance from festival organizers.

Behind the Scenes at the Festival

The festival’s organization ensures that all roses remain focused and healthy throughout the intense schedule. “People are tired. You’re being pulled for pictures, you’re being pulled for interviews. You’re trying to get to know 32 new people,” she elaborated. This year’s Rose Tour kicked off on August 14 in Meath, where contestants stayed at the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim and visited Emerald Park.

As the festivities ramped up, Daly noted the significance of adhering to curfews and other regulations. “We had a gala up in Co Meath, and there was a few of us looking at our chaperone saying, ‘When is it bedtime?'” She explained that these rules are in place for the participants’ best interests, allowing them to rest and prepare for the upcoming events.

Daily briefings further reinforce the festival’s structure, focusing on punctuality and overall wellness. “If you’re not on time, it’s all different wheels that are put in motion if one thing comes out,” she remarked. This level of organization has provided her with a newfound appreciation for the festival’s operations.

Fostering a Supportive Environment

Daly’s experience has revealed a deeper understanding of the festival’s inner workings. “From being involved, you think you know what the festival is, but I’ve just seen it in a brand new light,” she stated. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that each participant remains healthy and supported, allowing them to shine during the competition.

The rules, which may appear to be restrictive to outsiders, serve a vital purpose. “It’s the same way as we’re told to eat healthy, the same way as we’re told to exercise,” Daly explained. “Whether it’s at bedtime, whether it’s, you know, don’t drink too much.”

Alongside Daly, Nancy Lehane, the 22-year-old representative from Cork, expressed her excitement about participating in the festival. Recently graduated with a degree in Primary Education, Lehane described her role as a “dream come true” for her and her county.

The Rose of Tralee festival continues to be a cherished event, blending tradition with modern expectations. As the roses take the stage, the emphasis on health, safety, and support remains at the forefront, ensuring that all participants can showcase their talents and personalities to a global audience.
