Priest Remembers Alan McCluskey at Heartfelt Funeral Service
The funeral of 23-year-old Alan McCluskey, a victim of a tragic road accident, took place on March 15, 2024, in Drumconrath, Co. Meath. During the service, Father Finian Connaughton, the chief celebrant and Parish Priest of Drumconrath-Meath Hill, delivered an emotional homily, reflecting on Alan’s life and the profound impact of his sudden passing.
Fr. Connaughton, who has had a close relationship with the McCluskey family over the past twenty-five years, struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke about Alan’s love for his parents, Bernie and Martin McCluskey. He emphasized the disbelief felt by the community, noting how just days before the tragedy, Alan was seen driving through the village.
“Sudden and unexpected death does terrible things to us,” Fr. Connaughton stated. “Even as we carry out the funeral rituals, there remains an air of disbelief that this is happening to someone who sat in these benches just two Sundays ago.” He drew parallels between the grief felt by the congregation and the disappointment of the disciples in the Gospel, highlighting the shared experience of loss and shattered dreams.
Fr. Connaughton recalled the many milestones in Alan’s life, from his Baptism to his First Communion and Confirmation. He praised Alan’s unwavering faith, noting that he attended Mass every Sunday and frequently participated in additional church events, including a recent Redemptorist novena in Dundalk.
The priest shared anecdotes that illustrated Alan’s caring nature, describing how he looked out for friends who might be making poor choices. This quality, he suggested, reflected Alan’s commitment to the Christian value of loving one’s neighbour. Fr. Connaughton also highlighted Alan’s deep affection for his family, noting how he would often sit with them at the front of the church, even during his teenage years, which is uncommon for many young adults.
The homily took a light-hearted turn as Fr. Connaughton shared a memory of a conversation with Bernie McCluskey about Alan’s desire to leave school early to work. He humorously recalled the day he saw Alan being driven to his final Junior Cycle examination, anxious to return to work on the silage pit. “Not for Alan was the school desk and book learning,” he remarked, illustrating Alan’s preference for practical experience over formal education.
Fr. Connaughton concluded with a message of hope, reminding the congregation that there is a turning point symbolized by the Easter candle, representing new life and a brighter future. He encouraged those grieving to draw strength from Alan’s commitment to his faith and family.
The funeral service brought together friends and family, including fellow victims of the accident: Chloe McGee, 23, from Carrickmacross; Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee; Shay Duffy, 21, from Carrickmacross; and Chloe Hipson, 21, from Lanarkshire, Scotland. Collectively, their untimely deaths have left a profound void in their communities.
As the service concluded, the enduring love that Alan McCluskey had for his family and friends resonated deeply within those in attendance. Fr. Connaughton’s heartfelt tribute not only honored Alan’s legacy but also united a grieving community in their shared sorrow and remembrance.
