Tributes have poured in from Bruff, County Limerick, the ancestral home of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, following the death of his granddaughter, Tatiana Schlossberg. The 35-year-old journalist passed away on January 5, 2024, after battling a rare form of cancer. Her death comes just months after she welcomed her second child in May 2023.

In 2013, Ms. Schlossberg visited Bruff with her family, a journey that deepened her connection to her Irish roots. The town has expressed profound sadness at her passing, particularly through the annual Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Autumn School, which celebrates the Kennedy family’s legacy. Declan Hehir, director of the Autumn School, noted that the community is “keenly feeling the tragic death of Tatiana” and cherishes the memories of her visit.

Community Remembers Tatiana Schlossberg

During her visit, Ms. Schlossberg explored various sites tied to her family’s history, as three of her great-grandmother’s grandparents hailed from Bruff. Hehir reflected on the family’s enjoyment of the town and its ancestral connections, stating, “Those ties are the inspiration for the annual Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Autumn School.” The school aims to preserve the legacy of the Kennedy family and its Irish heritage.

Eileen McMahon, a distant cousin of the Kennedy family from nearby Adare, fondly recalled sharing a meal with Ms. Schlossberg during her 2013 visit. “She was a lovely young woman and she really enjoyed connecting with her Limerick cousins,” McMahon remarked, emphasizing the joy Ms. Schlossberg experienced in exploring her family’s heritage.

A Lasting Legacy in Bruff

In 2019, Bruff unveiled a life-sized bronze statue of John F. Kennedy, depicting him during his swearing-in ceremony in 1961. The statue features a Bible brought to the United States by his great-grandfather, Thomas Fitzgerald, who emigrated from Bruff to Boston in 1852. This sculpture serves as a reminder of the strong ties between the Kennedy family and the town.

As the community mourns the loss of Tatiana Schlossberg, they also celebrate the enduring connection between Bruff and the Kennedy legacy. From heartfelt tributes to cherished memories, the town continues to honor the family’s impact and the personal stories that intertwine with its history.
