Derry Mayor Raises Funds at Charity Ball for Local Causes
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, hosted a festive charity ball on December 1, 2023, at the historic Guildhall. The event aimed to raise funds for two vital local charities: PIPS Suicide Prevention Derry and The Castlederg Patient and Comfort Terminally Ill Fund.
Community Support and Engagement
The charity ball attracted a diverse gathering of community members, local business leaders, and dignitaries, all united in support of initiatives addressing mental health and end-of-life care. Attendees enjoyed an evening filled with entertainment, fine dining, and the opportunity to contribute to two causes that significantly impact the Derry community.
During the event, Councillor McHugh emphasized the importance of supporting local charities, stating, “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing mental health challenges and provide comfort to terminally ill patients.” His remarks highlighted the dual focus of the evening: raising awareness and funds for critical support services.
According to event organizers, the charity ball successfully raised over £10,000, which will be equally distributed between the two charities. This financial boost will assist PIPS in its ongoing efforts to reduce suicide rates in the region and enhance the support offered to those in distress.
Impact of Fundraising Efforts
The funds allocated to The Castlederg Patient and Comfort Terminally Ill Fund will provide essential resources for families navigating the challenges of terminal illness. This includes funding for palliative care services, which aim to improve the quality of life for patients and their families during difficult times.
The success of the charity ball reflects a growing trend within the community towards increased engagement in charitable activities. Residents have shown a strong commitment to supporting local causes, recognizing the profound impact these organizations have on individual lives and the greater community.
As the evening wrapped up, attendees expressed their gratitude and commitment to supporting future events. The enthusiasm surrounding the charity ball signifies a hopeful outlook for ongoing fundraising efforts in Derry, particularly as the holiday season approaches.
Councillor McHugh’s leadership in organizing this event has not only raised essential funds but also fostered a sense of unity within the community, proving that collective action can lead to meaningful change.
