The Irish government has confirmed a substantial commitment of over €330 million in humanitarian aid throughout 2025, aimed at alleviating suffering in some of the world’s most devastated regions. This funding underscores Ireland’s dedication to international solidarity and human rights during a year marked by escalating crises driven by conflict and climate change.

Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Micheál Martin emphasized the significance of this funding, stating it was part of Ireland’s ongoing efforts to address urgent humanitarian needs. The financial resources were distributed through reputable partners, including the United Nations and the Red Cross, providing life-saving assistance in critical areas such as Gaza and Lebanon.

Response to Global Crises

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee remarked on the unprecedented humanitarian crises that have unfolded globally over the past year. She noted that Ireland’s response was scaled to meet extreme needs in conflict-affected regions, including Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“We provided immediate emergency assistance to people affected by natural disasters, including the devastating earthquakes in Myanmar and Afghanistan, as well as climate-related disasters, such as the recent flooding in Sri Lanka,” McEntee stated. She highlighted that Ireland’s commitment to humanitarian aid has enabled partners to deliver rapid support to those facing significant hardship, offering hope in their darkest moments.

Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora Neale Richmond added that 2025 has been a year of immense hardship for millions, particularly for women and girls disproportionately impacted by humanitarian crises. He pointed to Sudan as a stark example, where women have faced alarming levels of violence and denial of basic rights such as education and healthcare.

“Ireland has remained steadfast in its commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of women and girls everywhere,” Richmond said. He also announced plans to increase support for protecting women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence in emergencies in 2026.

Supporting Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons

Ireland’s contributions also extend to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), addressing the escalating needs of millions of refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced individuals in underfunded situations like Afghanistan and Myanmar. With approximately 120 million people forcibly displaced globally, Ireland’s support is increasingly vital.

The Global Humanitarian Overview for 2026 predicts that 239 million individuals will require humanitarian assistance. Ireland’s ongoing commitment ensures that it remains a leading voice in protecting the world’s most vulnerable populations amid severe humanitarian crises.

This substantial financial commitment not only reflects Ireland’s humanitarian priorities but also reinforces its role on the global stage as a nation committed to human rights and dignity.
