A ceremony scheduled to present the new Iranian ambassador to Ireland with his credentials has been postponed due to ongoing protests in Iran that have resulted in a significant loss of life. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs announced the decision following reports of numerous Iranian protesters being killed and injured in the recent unrest.

In light of escalating tensions, the ceremony at Aras an Uachtarain, the official residence of the Irish President, was delayed. A spokesperson from the Department stated, “The decision to postpone the ceremony of credentials for the Ambassador-designate of the Islamic Republic of Iran was taken in light of protests in Iran in recent days which have seen very significant numbers of Iranians killed or injured and a communications blackout.”

Since late December 2022, protests have erupted across Iran, primarily sparked by grievances over a struggling economy. Demonstrators have faced intense crackdowns, leading to hundreds of deaths and thousands of detentions. The unrest has persisted despite efforts by authorities to restrict communication, including cutting off internet and telephone services.

On Monday, Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin called for an immediate end to the violence in Iran, emphasizing the right of Iranians to protest and express free speech. “The repression must end. I urge the authorities in Tehran to uphold the rights of all their citizens,” he stated. Martin added, “The violence must stop, the curtailing of basic freedoms must end, and dialogue begin at once.”

The decision to postpone the ambassador’s credential ceremony reflects Ireland’s commitment to human rights and its stance against the use of violence in suppressing dissent. As the situation in Iran continues to develop, the Irish government remains vocal in its support for the Iranian people’s rights to peaceful protest and freedom of expression.
