Cheaper Engagement Rings Linked to Longer Marriages, Study Finds

A recent study conducted by economic professors Andrew M. Francis and Hugo M. Mialon at Emory University reveals a surprising correlation between the cost of engagement rings and the longevity of marriages. Analyzing data from over 3,000 couples, the researchers aimed to evaluate how wedding expenditures influence marriage duration. Their findings suggest that spending less on engagement rings may actually lead to longer-lasting relationships.
The study indicates that couples who invest more than $20,000 on engagement rings are approximately 3.5 times more likely to experience divorce compared to those who purchase rings in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. Furthermore, those who spent between $2,000 and $4,000 on an engagement ring were 1.5 times more likely to divorce than couples who spent between $500 and $2,000. While this research primarily reflects trends in the United States, it raises critical questions about wedding spending habits globally.
Financial Pressures and Relationship Strain
The implications of these findings extend beyond just monetary aspects; they highlight the importance of financial stability in a marriage. Liam Croke, Managing Director of Harmonics Financial Ltd, emphasizes that starting a marriage with a solid financial foundation is crucial. He argues that couples should prioritize their financial health over societal expectations regarding engagement ring expenditures.
Croke points out that many couples face significant financial stress, which often places a strain on their relationships. For over two decades, conflicts over money have consistently topped the list of reasons for divorce. Other factors such as communication issues and intimacy problems also contribute but are secondary to financial disputes.
Illustrating this point, Croke recounts a recent encounter with a client who sought financial advice. The gentleman expressed feelings of financial insecurity due to a lack of savings and ongoing debt. He was paying €500 a month towards a term loan while his wife carried a credit card balance of €8,000. This couple’s financial troubles stemmed from decisions made prior to their marriage, including significant debt incurred from an expensive engagement ring.
Conversations About Money Are Essential
Croke stresses that open discussions about finances should occur before any marriage vows are exchanged. Couples must address their financial situations candidly, discussing debts, savings, and budget management. Key questions include: How much debt is each partner carrying? What are their savings? Who will manage household bills?
Avoiding unnecessary debt is crucial, especially in the context of engagement rings. Croke advises couples to resist societal pressures to spend exorbitantly on rings. Instead, they should focus on their unique financial situations, ensuring they do not jeopardize their future by overspending on jewelry.
Research supports the idea that financial transparency strengthens relationships. Studies show that a significant number of individuals—32% of women and 17% of men—have hidden purchases from their partners, and many high earners maintain financial secrets. Such discrepancies can lead to distrust and conflict, further complicating already strained relationships.
Croke’s insights emphasize that love alone is insufficient to sustain a marriage. Financial compatibility and transparency are equally essential. Couples should recognize that the money spent on an engagement ring could be better allocated towards savings for a home, emergency funds, or children’s expenses.
In conclusion, the findings from Emory University’s study provide valuable insights into the relationship between financial decisions and marital longevity. As couples navigate the complexities of engagement and marriage, prioritizing financial health can lead to more stable and fulfilling partnerships.
