Excessive Smartphone Use Linked to Cognitive Decline, Expert Warns
In an interview with the German magazine Welt, Marc Tadié, director of the French Brain Research Institute, warned that excessive smartphone use could significantly contribute to cognitive decline. He highlighted that the impact is particularly pronounced on the hippocampus, a critical brain region involved in memory functions. Tadié’s comments draw a striking parallel between the effects of smartphones and the observed shrinking of the hippocampus in London taxi drivers following the introduction of GPS navigation.
According to Tadié, the continuous engagement with smartphones undermines the neural pathways responsible for attention, perception, and memory consolidation. He likened this decline to an unused railway line that becomes overgrown with weeds, illustrating the gradual deterioration of cognitive function when these pathways are not actively engaged. While certain brain stimulation techniques may help restore some neural connections, they cannot fully compensate for the loss of real-life experiences that contribute to personal development.
Positive and Negative Impacts of Smartphone Use
Despite his concerns, Tadié acknowledged that smartphones can offer benefits, particularly for older adults. He noted that they may reduce feelings of loneliness, stimulate procedural memory, and enhance overall well-being. Nevertheless, he emphasized the necessity of moderation and appropriate use based on age. To address these issues, he proposed the idea of a ‘smartphone driving licence,’ which would set minimum age requirements depending on the functionality of the device. He also called for awareness campaigns to promote responsible smartphone usage.
Excessive smartphone reliance, according to Tadié, can erode empathy and diminish interpersonal relationships. Research indicates a decline in the ability to recognize emotional facial expressions, such as fear and sadness, among frequent smartphone users. Although young individuals may feel connected through social media, they often exhibit social withdrawal, preferring to engage online rather than participate in face-to-face interactions.
Tadié characterized smartphone addiction as a growing concern, largely due to the release of dopamine—the “feel-good hormone”—with each interaction on these devices. The algorithms designed to capture user attention create a cycle of constant stimulation, making this addiction particularly insidious. The treatment for severe cases often involves prolonged isolation in specialized centers, reflecting the seriousness of such addictive disorders.
Calls for Action in Educational Settings
In France, the absence of a nationwide smartphone ban in schools remains a contentious issue, despite advocacy from President Emmanuel Macron. Tadié supports implementing such a ban, arguing it could enhance students’ attention, concentration, and memory while reducing social inequality and instances of cyberbullying. In contrast, Belgium has taken proactive measures, instituting a strict ban on smartphones and other smart devices in schools starting from the 2025-2026 academic year. This regulation applies to both Flemish and Walloon schools, significantly limiting device usage on school premises.
Similarly, the Netherlands has enforced a ban on mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches in classrooms since 2024. Schools are required to establish clear agreements regarding the use of devices with teachers, parents, and students, aiming to foster a more conducive learning environment.
The dialogue surrounding smartphone use and its implications continues to gain traction, with experts like Tadié urging a balanced approach to technology integration in daily life. As society navigates the evolving digital landscape, the importance of mindful smartphone usage cannot be overstated, particularly as its effects on cognitive development and social interactions become clearer.
