Genetic Study Links Irish Giants to Unique Mutation

Recent genetic research provides insight into the legends of giants in Irish folklore. A study published in 2016, led by Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London and several other institutions, reveals a significant genetic mutation linked to gigantism. The research focuses on patients with acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that can lead to abnormal growth.

The ambitious study involved numerous institutions, including the universities of Exeter, Belfast, Dublin, and University College London, along with 17 other research entities. Researchers collected DNA samples from the general public and patients with acromegaly to identify carriers of a gene associated with childhood-onset acromegaly, which can often result in gigantism.

Discovery of a Genetic Mutation

In their findings, the researchers identified a mutation known as AIP (R304*) that was notably prevalent among individuals in Mid-Ulster, Northern Ireland. The data indicates that all identified Irish patients with this mutation, comprising 18 families and 81 carriers, are likely descendants of a single ancestor who lived in the region approximately 2,500 years ago. Among the identified carriers, 31 have developed acromegaly, with over half of these cases, specifically 18 patients, exhibiting signs of gigantism.

The clinical implications of this study are significant. Researchers emphasized the importance of screening family members, noting that their larger study revealed that 24% of seemingly unaffected carriers showed early signs of acromegaly. Some of these individuals were treated promptly as a result of genetic screening.

Folklore and Historical Context

The researchers suggest that their findings may provide a scientific basis for the numerous Gaelic myths surrounding giants in Ireland. The Giant’s Causeway and various legends about giant figures offer cultural context to the genetic data. In modern history, notable giants from Ireland include Charles Byrne, whose skeleton is housed in the Hunterian Museum in London. Genetic testing revealed that Byrne carried the same AIP mutation.

Historical records indicate the presence of several giants in Ireland over the years, such as Mary Murphy, known as the ‘Portrush Giantess’, and James Kirkland, one of the ‘Potsdam Giants’. These accounts reinforce the narrative presented by the genetic research.

Professor Sian Ellard from the University of Exeter Medical School, who contributed to the study, noted that the research aligns with observations made by the pioneering anthropologist James C. Prichard in 1826. Prichard commented on the prevalence of unusually tall individuals in Ireland, suggesting a unique biological factor contributing to these occurrences.

The researchers also predict that there may be 436 carriers and 86 affected individuals who remain undiagnosed in Ireland and among those with Irish ancestry globally. Early detection could help prevent the onset of gigantism, which is often accompanied by serious health complications.
